You’ve come to the right place! If you’re planning a trip to Mexico, one of the most important things you’ll need to do is get a SIM card.

I lived in Riviera Maya with my family for almost a year and know the best ways to get a SIM card. I wrote this article to help others based on my own experience struggling to find a SIM card when I first arrived at the Cancun airport.

If you aren’t lucky enough to have international data included on your home country’s cell phone plan, you’ll need a SIM card in Mexico issued from a national carrier rather than from your US carrier.

When you arrive in Cancun, the last thing you want to do is spend all your time searching for a place to buy a SIM card.

Sadly, your Telcel Cancun airport (aka: Telcel Aeropuerto Cancun) options aren’t as straightforward as you might wish. But with so many different options available, it can be tricky to know which one is right for you.

In this article, I’ll walk you through your Telcel Cancun airport options and provide some tips on what to look for when deciding.

1. Oxxo

If you aren’t in a hurry for a Telcel Cancun airport SIM card, head out to meet your transportation driver after baggage claim.

You can ask them to stop by an Oxxo store on the way to your Riviera Maya hotel or the Isla Mujeres ferry port.

There may be an extra fee for the stop, but it’s still far less than the rip-off prices at the airport. Make sure to tip your driver a couple of bucks for the service, too.

Oxxo is like 7-11 in Mexico. They are everywhere, especially in tourist areas. Some are standalone. Some are convenience shops for gas stations. You can easily find one on Google maps.

When you walk into Oxxo, tell them you want to buy a new Telcel chip. The plan you want is the “AMIGO SIN LIMITE” for 100 pesos (~$5 USD).

For that price, you’ll get 2 GB for 15 days as well as unlimited phone calls to Mexico, Canada, and the USA. Plus, the plans usually include unlimited data (restrictions apply) for social media, Waze, and Whatsapp.

Longer plans with more GB are available, too.

So take a moment to decide which option best suits your travel plans before simply buying what I suggest above. That’s for people who will only be in Mexico for a week or two.

2. Other Places to Buy Telcel SIMs

If you’re not able to find an Oxxo or if they’re all out of SIM cards, don’t worry. Skipping the overpriced Telcel Cancun airport SIMs wasn’t a bad choice. There are plenty of other places where you can purchase a SIM card in Mexico.

Best Buy, for example, is a popular electronics store that sells SIM cards from all the major providers. There aren’t many of these around, though. But if you do drive past one, it’s a safe bet to stop there.

Another option is Walmart, which usually has a wide selection of SIM cards from different providers. There’s a Walmart in Playa del Carmen and in Cancun.

Just walk into the store and ask for a Telcel SIM card. They should have no problem helping you out. You’ll have to pay for it at the cashier, not in the electronics section.

If you’re staying in an all-inclusive resort, you can also try going to the gift shop. I’ve seen some of them sell SIM cards before, but you’ll likely end up paying more.

Personally, I prefer BAIT. It’s only sold at Walmart but you get unlimited data for 30 days for $150 pesos. Plus, they have a similar coverage map to Telcel.

3. Buy a SIM Card Before Leaving Home

Did you know you can order a SIM card for Mexico and have it shipped to your house before your vacation even starts? Then you don’t even have to worry about finding a Telcel Cancun airport shop or alternative when you land!

Some people like to buy their SIM cards on Amazon, but the reviews are pretty bad for most of the offerings on there.

I’m open to the occasional bad review on a product but there are just too many bad ones overall in that sector my comfort so I personally don’t recommend taking that risk.

4. Get an eSIM

Select Apple and Android-compatible phones have started to roll out eSIMs in select countries. Thankfully, Mexico is one of them!

With an eSIM, you can get a local data plan without having to physically insert a local SIM card. This means that you can buy a Mexican data plan from your home country and have it all set up and ready to go by the time you land in Cancun.

Again, there’s no need to stress about Telcel Cancun airport shopping on arrival day!

One of the best things about using an eSIM is that you can usually get a much better deal than you would if you bought a Mexico SIM card in person.

Once you have an eSIM set up for your phone, you can even use it repeatedly in new countries you may visit. So if you travel frequently, an eSIM can save you a lot of money and hassle in the long run.

5. Get a Pocket WiFi Device

If you’re traveling with a group or family, you may want to consider getting a pocket WiFi device. These devices give you portable WiFi anywhere you go, and you can connect multiple devices to them at once.

They’re great for families because everyone can have their own device connected to the internet without eating up all the data.

In Mexico, you can usually find pocket WiFi devices for rent at the airport or your hotel. But you can also find them online.

Keep in mind that pocket WiFi devices can be pretty pricey, so only get one if you think you’ll really need it.

If you travel with one, you can either use the included sim or still shop for a Telcel Cancun airport SIM when you arrive. Either way works fine.

6. Use Airport WiFi

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of buying a Telcel Cancun airport SIM card or renting a pocket WiFi device, you can always just use the free wifi.

All the major airports throughout Mexico (including Mexico City) offer free WiFi, and Cancun International Airport is no exception.

However, the connection may be spotty and slow, so it’s not ideal. I’ve never had issues with it, but we tend to fly at off-peak times.

I only recommend using airport WiFi if you’re in a pinch and can’t seem to get your hands on a Telcel Cancun airport SIM card anywhere else.

Things to Know Before Buying a SIM Card in Mexico

☑️ Always have some cash on hand, as credit cards are not always accepted when paying for SIM cards throughout Mexico, at Oxxo or elsewhere.

☑️ You *usually* need to show your passport when purchasing a sim card. In some cases, you might be able to get away with just showing your driver’s license but it really depends on the store.

☑️ Prepaid SIM cards are called chips in Mexico.

☑️ Once you buy the SIM, ask the person at the counter to activate it for you. While you can do it yourself, it’s just much easier to have them do it.

Occasionally, they might refuse but usually, they’ll do it in less than a minute.

☑️ If you’re not a Mexican citizen, you might be asked to show your tourist visa. In that case, just show them your passport stamps and they should be satisfied.

☑️ When you’re buying your SIM card, be sure to ask for the “recibo” or receipt. You’ll need this to activate your service on your own or if you have any problems with your account.

☑️ If you are from the US and are still making payments on your phone, then you cannot use a foreign SIM card in your phone.

This is because your phone is still locked exclusively to the carrier. Contact your carrier before your trip if you aren’t sure if your phone is unlocked.

☑️ To find out if your phone is locked, try inserting a SIM card from another carrier. If the phone recognizes the new SIM card, then your phone is probably unlocked. If it doesn’t, then it’s still locked.

If your phone is indeed locked, you’ll need to get it unlocked before you leave for your trip. You can usually do this by contacting your carrier, but they may charge you a fee.
