If you’re doing research for a trip to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve on your Costa Rica vacation, you may have decided that you want to do a Monteverde waterfall hike.
However, there are actually several Monteverde waterfall hikes so if you’re trying to plan an itinerary, you likely won’t be able to visit everything in a single trip.
Located just 140 kilometers from San Jose, the Monteverde Costa Rica area actually encompasses several different preserves, including the Monteverde National Park and the Curi Cancha Reserve.
In this blog post, I’ll discuss all of the Monteverde waterfall options so you can choose which one is best for your interests, availability, and stamina.
Monteverde Waterfall Hike Choices
The waterfalls are in different reserves, and the hike to each can take several hours. Here’s a detailed description of each Monteverde waterfall hike so you can choose which one best suits your needs.
San Luis Waterfall
The San Luis Waterfall is located within a section of the rainforest surrounding Forest Reserve Santa Elena. Emerging from thickly wooded vegetation, this 100-meter (330 ft) waterfall is both magnificent and inspiring.
This cloud forest is on private property, so the entrance fees of $10 for adults and $8 for students and children are charged at the trail’s entrance.
The water sprays down the sides of the rocky cliff and then falls into a basin below.
Vegetation grows along the rocky boulders surrounding the water, and in the immediate area, visitors may see monkeys, birds, or other animals.
Getting to the San Luis Waterfall
There are several ways to get to the waterfall. If you do this Monteverde waterfall hike during the rainy season, I’d recommend one of the last two options.
It’ll take around three hours to get there along a path that meanders beside some smaller waterfalls and through the cloud forest.
Because the trail may be both mucky and slippery, you should ensure that you have suitable footwear if you decide to go.
Those that prefer not to walk can choose to traverse the trail by horseback riding. This is a fun, relaxing, and scenic way to travel.
We went horseback riding in San Miguel de Allende. It’s a great way for younger kids who can’t do the long hike to still enjoy the views on the trek.
Pro Tip: The research station, which is run by the University of Georgia, also serves lunch if you want a fun addition to the hike.
El Tigre Waterfalls Monteverde
This Monteverde waterfall hike offers four beautiful waterfalls on a longer trail. The El Tigre Waterfalls are located within the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve.
There is an entrance fee to access the reserve and hike to the waterfalls. The El Tigre waterfalls are some of the best in Costa Rica, and they’re definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
The first waterfall is only a 10-minute walk from the entrance. The other three waterfalls are located further up the trail, and it will take around two hours to reach them.
👉 This Monteverde waterfall hike is typically done as a guided tour because it takes longer and offers a great chance to see some cool wildlife! Plus you get lunch!
All four waterfalls are beautiful, but the last one is definitely the most impressive. It’s around 30 meters (100 ft) tall, and the water cascades down into a deep pool.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even jump in! Just make sure to heed the signs and only jump from the designated area. The rocks can be slippery, so use caution.
Catarata Los Murcielagos
The Catarata Los Murcielagos Monteverde waterfall hike was our first activity in the Santa Elena area. It’s not in an official forest preserve but it is located on private land.
The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for kids under 12, all cash-only. Our family of three paid 10,000 colones for entry.
The man who owns it is really nice. He’s just gotten a puppy and let Little Man play with it before our hike. Note that he speaks no English, so if you do go have a translation app handy if you don’t know Spanish.
This Monteverde waterfall hike is located a short walk outside of the busy part of town, so if you aren’t driving yourself you can easily walk there from your hotel or vacation rental.
If you do drive, there are only two parking spots. Get there early.
The hike itself is fairly easy. You will cross three bridges before you arrive at the waterfall itself. Some of the bridges look a little rickety but don’t worry. They’re perfectly safe!
You’ll also get to see some cool wildlife on the trail. Little Man’s favorite were all the leaf-cutter ants but we also saw some birds and assorted butterflies, including some Blue Morphos!
Once you arrive at the waterfall, there are some logs and rocks to rest on if you want to enjoy the scenery for a bit.
Or you can rest while your kids play parkour on the river rocks and hope they don’t fall in. We may have done this last option…
Pegaso Waterfall
The Pegaso Waterfall is located within the Children’s Eternal Rainforest Reserve. This reserve is actually the largest private reserve in Costa Rica, and it’s also one of the most biodiverse areas in the world.
Plus, it’s one of the few non-profit forest reserves in the Monteverde area! The Pegaso Waterfall is one of the best waterfalls in Costa Rica. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit.
There is an entrance fee of $15 for adults and $8 for students and children. Entry gives you access to the entire reserve, including its Monteverde waterfall hike.
The waterfall is around 30 meters (100 ft) tall, and the water cascades down into a deep pool. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even jump in!
The water is pretty cold, though, and jumping outside the marked areas is not safe. So be careful if you do this!
The hike to the waterfall is around 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles), and it’s considered to be of moderate difficulty. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, but it can be a bit slippery in places.
White-faced capuchin monkeys are most common in the Monteverde area. You may even see deer or agoutis!
Quebrada Cuecha Cascada
This 1.6-kilometer round-trip trail is located in Reserve Bosque Nuboso. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 35 min to complete.
With kids in tow, it’ll likely take longer. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and walking.
There are optional guided wildlife tours available at this reserve. Entrance costs are XX. The combined entrance fee and price of the guided tour is $20 USD.
It can still be rainy or foggy at all times of the year, including during the dry season. There’s a small waterfall at the end of the trail.
Pro Tip: Bosque Nuboso Reserve is a fairly popular reserve so go early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Overall, this Monteverde waterfall hike isn’t very strenuous and it’s not very long. You can easily do other activities on the same day as this one. It’s good for all fitness levels and ages.
Most people do this hike as part of a guided tour because it’s a bit outside of town. However, if you do drive yourself be aware that you can’t park at the front gate. Instead, you have to leave your car 1km down the hill.
There is security and parking assistance there. You can either walk to the entrance or take a $5 shuttle that comes to pick you up.
Monteverde Waterfall Hike Tips
☑️ If you want to check out one of Monteverde’s many beautiful waterfalls, it’s best to get there early. Parking is limited and the trails can get crowded. Plus, the earlier you start your hike, the cooler it will be.
☑️ Wear sturdy shoes and watch your step! The trails can be slippery in places. The trails also have things like tree roots, which can cause tripping.
So closed-toe shoes with a firm sole are a must when hiking anywhere in Costa Rica.
☑️ Keep an eye out for wildlife! You might see some cool animals on your Monteverde waterfall hike in Costa Rica.
On our Monteverde waterfall hikes we saw agoutis, monkeys, butterflies, birds, beetles, hummingbirds, and more!
Walking slowly and quietly is the best way to find animals on the path.
☑️ Be careful if you jump in the water on your Monteverde waterfall hike! It’s cold and jumping outside the marked areas is not safe.
We didn’t do this, as the strong undertow near waterfalls makes me nervous with a kid in tow.
☑️ Guided tours are available for most of the waterfall hikes in Monteverde. If you’re not comfortable doing the hike on your own, consider signing up for a tour.
It’s a great way to learn about the area and see some amazing waterfalls!
☑️ Stay on the trail. They are marked for a reason, which is safety. Most Monteverde waterfall hikes take place in protected reserves, so the trails are for the animals‘ safety as much as yours.
These are wild creatures you’re seeing, not zoo animals.
☑️ Bring insect repellent and sunscreen. Someone told us that there are no mosquitos in the cloud forest because it’s too high up.
I can categorically say that is absolutely untrue. We didn’t wear bug spray at first and were eaten alive by mosquitos.
☑️ Be aware of your surroundings. This is important for safety as well as a better hiking experience. You won’t see anything cool if you don’t pay attention!
☑️ Carry cash for entrance fees and souvenirs. Some of the places we visited were cash only and others took credit cards.
If you do pay with a credit card, ensure you know if they are charging in colones or dollars because the latter will use an exchange rate that isn’t in your favor.
Always charge credit cards in the local currency!
☑️ Don’t forget your camera! When you do see something amazing, you’ll want photos. This includes enormous trees that are wider than a US redwood!
☑️ Have fun! Waterfall hikes are a great way to enjoy nature and bond with your family. Because of our Monteverde waterfall hike experiences, Little Man became a fan of hiking instead of dreading them!
What to Wear on a Monteverde Waterfall Hike
As I mentioned before, closed-toe shoes are essential. You might want to consider hiking boots or at least a good pair of sneakers.
I would also recommend long pants to prevent scratches from the vegetation.
It can be cooler than you expect in the cloud forest, so take a light jacket. It will keep you warm at the beginning of your Monteverde waterfall hike. It will also double as an insect deterrent.
I always wear a hat when hiking, even in the cloud forest. The sun can be intense, especially when you’re at a higher elevation.
And, if it does rain (as it often does in Monteverde), you’ll be glad you have a hat to keep the rain out of your face.
A light rain jacket is also a good idea. We were caught in a few downpours and were so glad we had our rain gear!
In fact, we showed up in Costa Rica without rain jackets and decided on arrival to buy some after all the rain we experienced in Nicaragua. Thankfully a shop in town sold them at a reasonable price.
Finally, don’t forget your sunscreen and insect repellent. I would also recommend bringing along a first-aid kit, just in case.
These are always good to have when traveling, even if you’re not planning on doing any hikes.

Which Monteverde Waterfall is Best for families visiting Costa Rica?
If you’re looking for a quick family-friendly Monteverde waterfall hike, I would recommend Catarata Los Murcielagos. This is one of the smaller waterfalls in the area, but it’s still really beautiful.
The hike itself is less than an hour round trip, so it’s not too long for little ones. And, since it’s not as popular as some of the other waterfalls, it’s often less crowded.
That can be a big plus when you’re trying to keep track of little ones!
There is a small entrance fee to the park, but it’s worth it. The views from the final bridge are really stunning. And, if you’re lucky, you might even spot a few blue morpho butterflies!
