The reserves are open at night just so that tourists may have the opportunity to see the animals that come out during the night.

Most of these animals are nocturnal, so they aren’t seen during the day.

What to Expect on a Monteverde Night Walk

Most night walks in Monteverde are about 2 hours long and they start around 6 PM. Others may start as late as 8 PM.

You’ll be given a flashlight and a guide will take you on a trail through the forest. The guide will point out different animals and tell you about them.

You may see some animals, but it’s more likely that you’ll just hear them.

One of the cool things about these walks is that they’re usually pretty small groups. So, it’s a really intimate experience where you can ask the guide a ton of questions.

Most Monteverde Night Walks cost at least $35 USD per person. They sometimes include pickup and dropoff at your Santa Elena Hotel.

Prices have increased since the pandemic began, so anyone telling you that you should pay less than $25 is giving you outdated information. 

It’s hard to find night hikes at that price point very often anymore, and if you do transportation will likely cost extra.

Animals You Could See 

During Your Monteverde Costa Rica forest night walk, you may see a variety of different animals. The most common animals that people see are two-toed sloths and walking stick bugs.

Two-toed sloths are the only sloths that live in the Cloud Forest, and they have fur that allows them to live at higher altitudes. Walking stick bugs are so named because they look like sticks when they are still.

Fun Fact: Walking Sticks are important predators in the Cloud Forest because they eat other bugs.

People also commonly see viper snakes, tarantulas, and birds on Monteverde night walks in the cloud forest. Vipers are venomous but they are not aggressive, and will usually try to avoid humans.

Tarantulas are the largest spiders in Costa Rica, and they can be quite dangerous if threatened. Birds can be seen darting through the trees or perched on branches looking for food.

In addition to these animals, people might also see poison dart frogs, kinkajous, and grey foxes on a night walk in the Cloud Forest.

Poison dart frogs get their name from their toxic skin secretions, which can be deadly to humans.

1. Bring bug spray.

The insects in the forest are mostly harmless, but they can be annoying. Bug spray will help to keep them away so that you can enjoy your walk.

If you’re really sensitive to mosquitos, wear long pants and a jacket as well.

2. Dress in layers.

The temperature in the Cloud Forest can change throughout the day, and it can be quite cold at night.

So, it’s important to dress in layers that you can take off or put on as needed. Even if it’s not raining, it can get rather windy.

3. Bring a flashlight.

Your guide will provide you with a flashlight, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own as well.

That way, you’ll have a backup in case the batteries die or something happens to the guide’s flashlight.

4. Be respectful of the animals.

5. Be prepared for rain.

The Cloud Forest is famous for its rain, so there’s a good chance that you’ll get wet on your night walk.

Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and bring a rain jacket or poncho. Quick-dry clothing, like Dri-fit, is really useful in Costa Rica!

6. Know Your Walking Limits.

The Monteverde night walk tours take approximately two hours; about the same length as a coffee farm tour.. You’ll be walking or standing for almost all of that time.

If you have any issues with your feet, legs, or back, let the guide know before the tour starts so that they can try to accommodate you.

If you have small kids, plan to babywear. It’s later in the evening, in the dark, and the kids get cranky. Don’t make them walk for 2 hours if they usually go to bed at 7 pm.

7. Watch Your Step.

The forest floor can be uneven and there are often roots sticking up. So, it’s important to watch your step and take your time.

If you need to rest, just let the guide know and they will stop so that you can catch your breath.

8. Don’t forget your camera!

The Monteverde Cloud Forest is an incredibly photogenic place, and you’ll definitely want to take some pictures while you’re there.

If you have a DSLR camera, make sure to bring it. But even if you don’t, your phone’s camera will work just fine.

9. A telephoto lens is best for photos.

The animals in the forest are often quite far away, so it can be difficult to get a good photo with a standard lens.

If you have a telephoto lens, make sure to bring it! If not, try to get as close to the animals as possible.

10. Listen to your guide.

Your guide is there to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience. They know the forest and the animals very well, so make sure to listen to them and do as they say.

11. Stay on the trails.

For your safety and the safety of the animals, it’s important to stay on the trails at all times.

The Cloud Forest is a delicate ecosystem, and you could easily get lost if you wander off the trail.

12. Don’t Use the Flash.

Whether you’re using a camera or your phone, keep the flash off at all times. That’s, in part, what the flashlights are for.

The flash can be very disruptive to the animals and it’s not necessary because there’s generally enough light to take a good photo. 

Choosing a Monteverde Night Walk

There are three major factors that you need to consider when choosing a Monteverde night walk.

These will help you pick the right company for your excursion based on your individual preferences.

Small Groups

Customers value small groups. One thing that El Bosque Night Tour and Don Rodolfo’s Night Tour have in common is that they only deal with tiny groups of eight people or less, which leads to a higher degree of client satisfaction.

In contrast, Santamaria and the Kinkajou Walk at night hikes offer groups of eight to fifteen passengers, leading to some dissatisfaction among customers.

On a small-group night trip, you will likely see more and learn more.

On the other hand, in a large group night tour, those at the rear of the party may not hear the guide or see the creatures that people in front get to view.

On Viator, several people reported this problem and expressed their dissatisfaction with a low rating on their experience.

But if that’s not an issue for you, then don’t worry about group sizes.

Expectations
