I spent three months exploring Costa Rica with my family, in our car, during our Pan American Highway road trip. We also drove between Jaco and Monteverde during our stay.
Jaco is a popular beach destination on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, while Monteverde is a mountain town near the continental divide.
The two places are about 2.5 hours apart by car. However, if you want to save money and/or don’t have access to a car, there are other options for getting from one place to another.
So let’s jump in and look at all of your options, so you can decide which option is best for you!
How To Get From Jaco To Monteverde
The best ways to get from Jaco to Monteverde are by shuttle, bus, and car. Generally, the cheaper the option the longer it’ll take. And the faster options are generally more expensive.
Jaco to Monteverde: By Shuttle
Shuttles are generally the fastest way to get from Jaco to Monteverde, as they pick you up right where you’re staying and drop you off at the entrance to your next hotel. Generally, the ride takes about three hours.
It’s definitely the easiest way to get from Jaco to Monteverde since all you have to do is put your bags in the vehicle and enjoy the scenery on the way to your next stop!
There’s no worrying about road conditions or aggressive drivers, and you don’t have to make extra stops for other riders.
There’s also an option to take a shared shuttle, it’ll be a bit faster than the bus but you’ll make some extra stops for pickup and dropoff of other passengers.
A shared shuttle usually leaves at a set time while a private shuttle leaves at the time you designate.
A private shuttle will generally cost $250-$300 USD while a shared shuttle will usually be $50-$60 USD. You can also use their services in the reverse, from Monteverde to Jaco.

Jaco to Monteverde: By Bus
Traveling from Jaco to Monteverde by bus is by far the cheapest route. However, it’s also the most complicated and takes the longest.
You have to take two different buses and pay for two different bus fares. In total, the bus from Jaco to Monteverde will take about four hours and costs $6 USD.
Jump aboard the bus for your journey from Jaco to Puntarenas with departure times at 6 am, 9 am, 12 pm, and 4:30 pm. Enjoy 1 hour and 30 minutes of traveling time as you make your way to Puntarenas.
For an economical $2 USD, you can take Transportes Quepos Puntarenas from Jaco to Puntarenas.
To get up-to-date schedules, prices, and route information just visit the official Transportes Quepos Puntarenas website. Twice daily, a bus departs from Puntarenas to Monteverde at 8:30 am and 2:15 pm.
Plus, additional busses run on certain days of the week – 1:15 pm (Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Sunday) and 3:30pm (Tuesday Thursday & Saturday).

The bus from Puntarenas to Monteverde costs $4 USD and the travel time is 2 hours and 30 minutes, but it could take longer.
Between the two bus legs and the waiting time in between, taking the bus from Jaco to Monteverde will be take at least five hours. You’ll need to pay for bus fares on-site at the bus station in Jaco. It’s cash only.
Jaco to Monteverde: By Car
Driving in Costa Rica isn’t very difficult if you’re going between major tourist destinations.
Generally, the main roads are paved and in good condition. We had no major issues driving our Toyota 4Runner around the country, including between Jaco and Monteverde.
Driving yourself from Jaco to Monteverde (and in the reverse) is not difficult. The roads between the two are all paved and well-marked.
Plus, you can stop when you want to for scenic overlooks, snacks, and quick stops for a meal or a snack.
This is also the quickest way to get from Jaco to Monteverde. We drove it in about 2.5 hours, including a stop for gas on Route 1.
If you’re visiting multiple destinations in Costa Rica, or want more freedom in your sightseeing excursions, I recommend renting a car!
You can also take a taxi from Jaco Beach to Monteverde. The fare is usually around $140-160 USD.
However, at that price, you might as well book a private shuttle so you don’t have to wander around negotiating the fare with a taxi.

Jaco to Monteverde: On a Day Trip
There are several great cloud forest preserves in the town surrounding Santa Elena. The entire area is referred to as Monteverde, although only one of the preserves near Santa Elena is actually named Monteverde.
