I spent three months exploring Costa Rica with family during our Pan-American Highway road trip, and we took this exact route from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio on our way to a couple of amazing house sitting opportunities.
Visiting Monteverde and Manuel Antonio had been on my bucket list for a while, and I’m so glad we decided to take the time to visit these two amazing places.

How To Get From Monteverde to Manuel Antonio
The three main ways to get from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio are by shuttle, by bus, and by car. Each one has its pros and cons, which I’ll discuss below.
Monteverde to Manuel Antonio: By Shuttle
When traveling from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio, shuttles are generally the most popular choice.
They collect you directly at your Monteverde accommodation and drop you off right by the entrance of your Manuel Antonio hotel. Plus, they provide a scenic view while en route!
Generally speaking, this journey takes around three or four hours depending on traffic and weather conditions.
Using shuttles is undoubtedly the most convenient way to travel between these two towns; all that’s left for you to do is pop in your bags and relax during the ride!
There’s no need to be concerned about the road or other drivers when taking a private shuttle. Plus, you don’t have to make multiple stops like with a shared shuttle.
If speed is your main concern, though, then perhaps Shared Shuttle might fit your needs better. They usually leave at pre-determined times and can cost between $40-$60 USD.
However, if comfort and convenience are important factors for you then a private shuttle will likely appeal more. They typically cost around $300-$400 USD but they leave whatever time suits you best, not just predetermined ones.
Plus, with shuttles, you can typically use them in both directions, both from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio or vice versa.

Monteverde to Manuel Antonio: By Bus
If you are looking for an economical way to get from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio, public transportation is the answer.
However, it may not be the easiest option as it requires a significant investment of time and energy. Plan on departing early in the morning and arriving late afternoon; three buses will need to be taken throughout your journey.
Furthermore, navigating these buses can be difficult if Spanish isn’t your first language. In spite of this though, riding public transport can save you money while still getting you where you need to go.
If that fits within your budget constraints then keep reading. I’ll explain how best make use of this public transit system!
If you’re looking to journey by bus from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio, the trip is estimated to take around eight hours. To begin, be sure to catch the 5:30 am bus in Monteverde that will transport you all the way down to Puntarenas.
Ensure you secure your tickets for Route 625 departing from Monteverde and arriving in Puntarenas. Be sure to select Monteverde as the origin city and Puntarenas as the final destination city when purchasing tickets.
Be sure to arrive at the Bus Terminal in Monteverde at least 5 minutes before the departure time on the departure day to check-in. The bus will leave at 5:30 am with or without you, be on time.
The Monteverde – Puntarenas bus may make a few stops in the quaint villages of La Lindora, La Guaria, Fernandez and Guacimal; however, passengers must depart the final stop at the Monteverde Terminal in Puntarenas.
From there, hop onto another bus at 10 am bound for Quepos. The Monteverde bus usually arrives by 8 am at Puntarenas.
Once you disembark, it’s best to get directions from the driver that will help guide you three blocks away toward the Quepos Terminal in Puntarenas. Asking for assistance ensures that you reach your destination correctly and on time!
Despite the fact that he may not speak English, you can simply tell your bus driver “Bus a Manuel Antonio por favor” and he will know that you’re planning on going to Manuel Antonio. He will then direct you to the correct stop with ease!
This will ensure you’re at the last bus bound for Manuel Antonio by 1 pm. You’ll arrive at the Quepos Terminal around 12:30 pm.
If you’re not staying in Quepos, and need to get to the actual town of Manuel Antonio then you’ll need to take a fourth bus.
Buses from Quepos to Manuel Antonio run pretty regularly and take about 15-20 minutes. They cost less than $1 USD. Best case scenario, you’ll be in Manuel Antonio town by 1 pm.
Extra Things to Know
When traveling by bus, you can’t buy tickets far in advance. You can only buy bus tickets one or two days before departure on the Transmonteverde website. Unfortunately, the site doesn’t always provide real-time availability of tickets.
And sometimes the site doesn’t work at all so you might have to visit the Transmonteverde Office to buy them in person.
Overall, traveling by bus from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio is a long and slightly difficult process. If you’re lucky, the entire trip will take 7.5 hours.
But it does cost less than $10 USD per person, so that’s a nice upside! Unless you’re on a really, really tight budget I don’t recommend it.
Monteverde to Manuel Antonio: By Car
Exploring Costa Rica by car is pretty simple when you’re headed to key tourist destinations. Most major roads are in excellent condition and maintained, so our trip from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio was a breeze!
We drove our Toyota 4Runner without any issues. The routes were all paved and clearly marked for easy navigation. Overall, driving through Costa Rica can be done safely and hassle-free!

It is important to note that Monteverde is a cloud forest. You will be driving down through the clouds to get to Manuel Antonio. A portion of the drive will be through the clouds in what looks like dense fog.
Having done this type of driving a few times now, it’s a bit spooky to see nothing but white all around you but it’s not inherently dangerous. Plus, you can pause your journey at any time for mesmerizing views and to grab lunch or a snack along the way.
This is also the quickest way to get from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio. We drove it in about 3.5 hours, including a stop on Route 1 for gas.
Tips for Driving in Monteverde
If you plan on traveling to Costa Rica, prepare for a bumpy journey. Roadways are can be full of potholes and narrow passageways with substandard illumination and labeling.
Plus, there can be unpaved side roads in popular tourist locations like Manuel Antonio and Monteverde.
And locals have an innate knowledge of the roadway system which allows them to drive recklessly at higher speeds than most foreigners would be comfortable driving. This can cause stress and uneasiness for tourists.
When visiting Costa Rica, you may experience some bad weather. One moment it can be a clear and sunny day, the next an unexpected thundercloud may bring a sudden downpour!
Although this proves not to be a major issue during the dry season (December-April), rain is rather commonplace throughout May-November.
Pro Tip: Rain makes driving particularly tricky, although we didn’t have major issues when we were there August through October.
During the rainy season, roads can take a real beating from precipitation and its damaging effects. Potholes tend to emerge at this time of year, and repair crews may take several months to address the necessary repairs.
I don’t say this to dissuade you from driving in Costa Rica. After driving in our hometown of Chicago for over 16 years, we weren’t terribly put off by it.

Taxis from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio
If you’re setting off to explore multiple places in Costa Rica, or simply want more flexibility with your outings, I firmly suggest renting a car! With this option, the freedom is all yours.
Taking a taxi from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio is an option – usually costing around $140-160 USD, but it could be higher. Taxis enforce this rate because the law states that they are limited in providing service outside of their jurisdiction.
In other words, if the driver takes you from one location to another and can’t return back immediately due to regulations, then they must charge you both ways so as not to lose out on potential customers while away!
It’s well worth paying the extra money for a private shuttle instead of risking being stuck in an unfamiliar city haggling for a reasonable price with taxi drivers.
Plus, you won’t be surprised by any additional fees such as having to pay the return fare!
