Costa Rica is a nature lover’s paradise, and the Manuel Antonio area is no exception. To be clear in addition to Manuel Antonio National Park, there is also a town called Manuel Antonio which is adjacent to the National Park.
However, in tourism terms, the entire area between Quepos town a few kilometers north as well as Manuel Antonio is all generally referred to as Manuel Antonio.
We spent over six weeks there during our Pan-American Highway road trip, which gave us plenty of time to find and do all the best things to do in Manuel Antonio.
And now we’re sharing them with you because sharing is caring, and this whole website is about helping people plan their next amazing adventure. Let’s go!
Kid-Friendly Things to Do in Manuel Antonio
From hiking and beaches to boat tours and farm visits, there are so many cool and unique things to do in Manuel Antonio with kids. Or without!
We spent a month here and still feel like we barely scratched the surface! Here are some ideas to get you started on your vacation in Manuel Antonio.
Note: This post includes things to do in the Manuel Antonio area of both Manuel Antonio and Quepos towns.
1. Visit Manuel Antonio National Park
This world-famous national park is teeming with wildlife, from sloths and monkeys to iguanas and parrots. There are also beautiful beaches here that the kids will love.
👉 Hire a guide to help you spot wildlife. Sloths are actually pretty hard to find on your own!
We found a family of white-faced capuchins right next to our hiking trail!
Pro Tip: You must buy tickets online in advance and show your confirmation code at the park entrance. Parking is 2000 colones cash at the official lot.
Make sure you wear your swimsuit under your clothes as well as some shoes you don’t mind getting wet while hiking because the beaches run along the hiking trails in several spots.
You may want to take a mid-hike break to enjoy the beach.
2. Night Walk
👉 This night tour is highly rated and a great choice for families!
This is a great activity for the whole family! You’ll get to see all sorts of nocturnal animals, including spiders, snakes, lizards, and more.
Next to Manuel Antonio National Park, there is a private reserve that offers night tours.
It’s a huge hit with families. The guides are very knowledgeable and will help you spot all sorts of animals. Just make sure you wear closed-toe shoes and bring a flashlight.
Pro Tip: There are also some excellent Night Walk options in Monteverde, too.
3. Dama Island Estuary
Just a short drive ride from Quepos, this mangrove estuary it’s own unique ecosystem. It is home to several species of birds, monkeys, snakes, crocodiles, and other wildlife. It’s a great place to go kayaking with a guide.
👉 The Nacarcosta Wildlife Tour is a wonderful family adventure!
There are also motorboat tours to take you around, which are great for seniors or families with very small kids or babies. Tours can be arranged during the day or in the evenings.
4. Go Ziplining
Costa Rica is known for its incredible zip line tours, and there are several operators in Manuel Antonio. This is a great way to get the kids active and outside enjoying the lush jungle scenery.
👉 This tour allows kids as young as 4 to participate. However, I wouldn’t recommend ziplining for kids under 7 or 8.
In our experience, kids usually don’t weigh enough to consistently reach the end of the zip line.
When he was 7, Little Man got stuck in the middle of a zip line in Mexico and the employees had to gear up to go get him so think carefully before going ziplining with lightweight kiddos.
5. Take a Boat Tour
There are plenty of boat tours available in Manuel Antonio, from chartered fishing trips to dolphin and whale watching tours. This is a great way to see some of Costa Rica’s amazing marine life up close.
👉 This tour even has waterslides for when the kiddos get tired of watching the water for whales!
Dolphin tours are generally available year-round, but whale-watching tours are best done from August to March. Yes, you read that correctly!
Whale watching on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica is some of the best on earth. You have a chance to see humpback whales, pilot whales, and even the occasional blue whale. Costa Rica has the world’s longest whale watching season!
The humpback whales of the Southern Hemisphere leave Antarctica in July and arrive in Costa Rica between August and November.
Northern hemisphere whales migrating to Central America from Alaska depart between December and March.
👉 If you want a truly unique experience, hire a private catamaran just for your family or group!
6. Go Horseback Riding
👉 This highly-rated tour includes a visit to a jungle waterfall and allows kids 8+ to participate!
Horseback riding is a great way to explore the jungle and beaches around Manuel Antonio. Several tour operators offer horseback tours for all levels of riders.
We didn’t have a chance to go horseback riding here, but we did go horseback riding in Mexico when we stayed in San Miguel de Allende for six weeks.
I can vouch for it generally being a very kid-friendly activity! It’s probably best suited for kids that are at least 7 or 8 though, to ensure they can stay on the horses safely.
7. Visit a Coffee Farm
Costa Rica is one of the world’s leading producers of coffee, and there are several coffee plantations open to visitors in the Manuel Antonio area.
👉 This tour highlights cacao and sugar cane farming in addition to coffee production in Costa Rica!
This is a great way to learn about how coffee is grown and harvested. Adults more than kids will love the delicious samples, but it’s still a fun experience!
8. Learn to Surf
Manuel Antonio is a great place to learn to surf, with several beginner-friendly beaches in the area. There are also several surf schools that offer lessons and rentals.
👉 Most surf schools on the beaches charge $50/hour + board rental. Save money by booking this 3-hour package in advance!
Fun Fact: Playa means beach in Spanish.
Playa Espadilla in Manuel Antonio town center has good surfing and several surf schools, but it can get busy since it’s right in the middle of everything.
Playa Playitas is a bit quieter but still has surf rentals and lessons.
9. Day Trip to Nauyaca Waterfalls
This is a must-do activity when visiting Manuel Antonio! The Nauyaca Waterfalls are some of the most beautiful in Costa Rica.
👉 This tour includes transportation, a guide, breakfast, and lunch.
The water flow from the two enormous waterfalls on separate levels with natural swimming pools at Nauyaca is truly magnificent. There are two entrances, each of which leads to a different pathway down to the cataract.
The falls are located about an hour and a half drive from Quepos. You can either drive there yourself (a 4-wheel drive is recommended) or book a tour. It’s a long day, but so worth it!
10. Rainmaker Conservation Park
Why not go explore the Rainmaker Conservation Park, which offers gorgeous waterfalls and suspension bridges?
👉 You can pre-book a guided tour that includes round-trip transportation, a professional guide, and entrance fees.
It’s on 2,000 hectares of land that are off-the-beaten path and less visited by tourists than Manuel Antonio, so you’re likely to see a lot of wildlife.
Rainmaker Park is located just 30 minutes outside of town, making it a great activity to do if you’re staying in Manuel Antonio.
You don’t need a 4×4 car to get there – any vehicle will do if you want to drive yourself. Tickets for the self-guided tour cost 20 USD, and guided tours cost about 60 USD per person.
11. Los Campesinos Reserve
Los Campesinos is a hidden gem located in the Manuel Antonio area, with flora and fauna similar to the national park.
The reserve is only 25 kilometers from Quepos, and it includes 35 hectares of primary and secondary forest.
👉 Because it’s harder to get to, especially without a 4WD vehicle, I do recommend a guided tour for this excursion.
If you drive yourself, you must have a 4WD vehicle and you’ll spend about 1 hour getting from Manuel Antonio to Los Campesinos on a rough mountain road. You can walk around on your own or join a guided tour once you’ve arrived.
Los Campesinos charges $13 USD to get in without a tour, and there are several different routes on the property that you can explore.
One of the paths goes over a valley on a cable car, while another leads you across a valley on a rope bridge.
The last path leads to an outlook offering views of Manuel Antonio National Park. And, after you’ve finished your walk in the reserve, you may dine on the premises!
Los Campesinos offers some really fun extras as well including horseback riding tours for $44 USD, a medicinal plant tour for $10 USD, a village tour of a local community for $20 USD, and guided hikes along their trails.
This reserve is open on weekdays from 8 am to 3 pm, and on weekends from 8 am to 5 pm.

12. Chocolate Tour
The family that owns this farm has cultivated a four-hectare (10-acre) plot in the mountains of Mastatal for nearly 30 years and recently began focusing on cacao.
👉 This chocolate tour is one of the most delicious things to do in Manuel Antonio.
They flavor their bean-to-bar organic chocolate with fruits and spices that come directly from the farm, producing some of the best we’ve ever tasted.
We’ve been on a few different chocolate excursions previously, including in Mexico, but what sets the tour in Manuel Antonio apart is the personal touch.
One of the family members personally takes you around the farm to showing you each step in the process of making chocolate.
On the tour, you get the chance to practice tempering the liquidy chocolate goodness and even grind the raw cacao.
13. Go on a Spice Farm Tour
Rainforest Spices is a great spice farm to visit near Manuel Antonio. They offer tours of their farm, as well as a chance to learn about the different spices they grow and how they are used.
The kids will love the chance to see (and smell!) all the different spices. We absolutely loved this tour, especially the tasting at the end. You can read our full review here.
14. Visit Mountain Top Park
This park offers stunning views of the coast and jungle, as well as hiking trails and hanging bridges. It’s a great place to explore the area’s natural beauty!
Pro Tip: Although they open at 10 am, the restaurant doesn’t open until noon. Go at 11 am so the restaurant is open when you finish the bridges.
Plus, when you get to the top via the hanging bridges, you get to relax at their restaurant and enjoy a cool drink. We all got mango smoothies that were the size of our heads. Little Man was in heaven!
15. Eat at El Avion
This restaurant has an actual airplane inside! How cool is that?! You can’t eat inside the plane, but you do pass through it to head upstairs to one of the two levels of dining.
Pro Tip: There is also some dining on the ground floor for people who can’t use the stairs.
The kids will love exploring the plane, and the adults will love the delicious food. Make sure you get there early though, as it gets crowded quickly, especially at sunset on a clear day.
The food is reasonably priced for the area, too. Plus, it even offers an actual kid’s menu!
16. Enjoy the Beaches
Manuel Antonio has several beautiful beaches that are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring.
The water is moderately calm, especially at the beaches closer to Manuel Antonio, and there are plenty of beach restaurants and bars to enjoy.
Fun Fact: There are over 10 beaches in Manuel Antonio!
Playa Espadilla is the main beach in Manuel Antonio and is great for swimming, sunbathing, and people-watching.
17. Watch the Sunset
One of the best things to do in Manuel Antonio is to watch the sunset. There are several great spots to catch the sunset, including Playa Espadilla and El Avion.
We watched the sunset from El Avion, and it was gorgeous! I was too busy enjoying time with friends to take a photo though. Oops!
I highly recommend grabbing a cocktail or two and enjoying the show. Unlike me, make sure you have your phone or camera ready to capture the beautiful colors!
You can also watch it for free from any of the beaches in Manuel Antonio. Every clear evening, the sunsets are stellar so you’ll have plenty to choose from!
18. Explore the Quepos Malecon
The Quepos Malecon (aka: boardwalk) is a great place to take a stroll, people watch, and enjoy the views.
It’s also a popular spot for fishing, so you may even see some people fishing off the tidal beach area below it during low tide.
You can walk to the north end of the Malecon and take a picture of or with the colorful Quepos town sign.
There’s even a playground at the southern end of the Malecon for kids to enjoy. It’s fully enclosed, with a gate, so little ones can’t run off.
It even has accessible swings so kids in wheelchairs or who can’t sit up on their own can get in on the fun!
19. Kids Saving the Rainforest Sanctuary
This is a great activity for animal lovers of all ages. The sanctuary is home to many animals, including sloths and monkeys, who can’t live in the wild.
When we went, there was a monkey with one arm as well as another who was rescued from a poor life as a pet. This sanctuary was started by two 9-year-old girls in 1999, the same year I finished high school!
You have to book tours in advance. They are $60 for adults and $45 for kids under 12. They also offer volunteer days, but those are limited to adults 18+.
20. Quepos Farmer’s Market
On Friday nights and Saturday mornings, the Quepos Farmers Market is in full swing right next to the Malecon! It takes place every Friday from 3 pm to 11 pm and Saturday 6 am to 12 pm.
There are a variety of items for sale in the market, including exotic fruits and vegetables, local crafts, cheese, bread, ice cream, and other cooked foods.
There’s so much to try and it’s such a unique experience getting to see a real Costa Rican marketplace!
By visiting the farmer’s markets, you will not only learn about all of the produce grown locally in Costa Rica but gain an insight into the culture as well.
You’ll find that most of the people at feria are locals going about their daily lives, picking out produce for their families or restaurants.
21. Picinas El Tucan
This little gem is just outside Quepos, near the BM and Maxi Pali grocery stores. You’ll need a rental car or a taxi to get there, as it’s a bit of a walk from the main tourist drag.
Pro Tip: Make sure you arrange with the taxi when to pick you back up, as none will naturally come by here.
This is a restaurant, bar, and local waterpark all in one. They offer three pools, a large cold tub with jets that Little Man called a jacuzzi, a decent-sized splash pad, and two water slides.
There’s also a small playground with three swings, a slide, and a teeter-totter.
Picinas El Tucan is perfect for a hot day and the food is pretty good too. The staff is incredibly friendly and they have an affordable menu. It’s all in Spanish, and all of the staff speak only Spanish.
It’s more of a local place, as we were the only foreigners there the day we went. For us that’s part of the charm, though.
It’s a great place to meet some of the friendly people of Costa Rica and see how they spend their weekends.
The entrance fee is only $3,000 Colones. Food and drink are charged separately. They do accept credit cards.
Best Time to Visit Manuel Antonio
Similar to Nicaragua, the best time to visit Manuel Antonio is from December to April. This is the dry season in Costa Rica, so you can expect sunny days and little rain.
However, this is also the peak tourist season, so accommodation and tour prices will be higher.
If you’re looking to avoid the crowds and save some money, consider visiting Manuel Antonio from May to November. This is the wet season, though.
While you will have to deal with some rain it is generally limited to afternoon or overnight thunderstorms.
We spent two months in Costa Rica during the wet season and had a lovely time! The benefit of coming at this time of year is that prices are generally lower and there will be far fewer tourists around.
No matter when you visit Manuel Antonio, you’re sure to have an amazing time! There are so many things to do in this beautiful corner of Costa Rica.
Where to Stay in Manuel Antonio
There are a variety of accommodation options available in Manuel Antonio. You can choose to stay in a hotel, hostel, or even a vacation rental villa.
While some hostels offer beds in a shared dorm starting at $20/night, I don’t recommend those options for family travelers.
For a family of four, you’ll likely be looking at hotel rooms starting at $75/night. However, these prices can vary greatly depending on the season.
If you’re visiting during the high season (December to April), expect to pay closer to $200/night.
If you’re looking for something a little more luxurious, there are plenty of options available. You can find luxury villas starting at $300/night.
Many of these come with full kitchens, private pools, and gorgeous ocean views. There are also budget vacation rentals with a kitchen starting around $100/night.
If you don’t want to do hours of your own research for a great place, I recommend these options for staying in Manuel Antonio:
Luxury: Arenas del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort
Experience white sand beaches, beachfront dining, and beach massages at Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort. With 11 beautiful acres of rainforest around it, this is the only truly luxury resort in Manuel Antonio.
With a free full breakfast, a roundtrip airport shuttle, and two pools with poolside bars, you may never want to leave! All guests have access to free in-room WiFi as well as a terrace with shopping facilities.
Family Tip: Kids stay free, rooms come with a separate sitting area, and babysitting is available onsite for an extra charge.
Treat yourself to a manicure/pedicure, a massage, or a body wrap at the onsite spa.
Enjoy ocean views and happy hour at the two onsite restaurants while relaxing by the pool. On-site activities include ecotours, hiking/biking, and surfing/bodyboarding.
Mid-Range: Shana by the Beach Manuel Antonio
Shana by the Beach Manuel Antonio is a 4.5-star hotel by the ocean that offers free continental breakfast and an attached winery. The experience feels pretty luxurious without the price tag.
The roundtrip airport shuttle is another added convenience for guests at this hotel situated in the perfect spot to take advantage of all there is outdoors with beach towels provided too!
Family Tip: Kids stay free (1 child per 1 adult) and there’s a separate children’s pool
Spoil yourself rotten with the on-site spa’s many offerings like facials, sports massages, and body scrubs before working it all off in their onsite gym or going hiking or biking nearby.
To wind down after a long day playing hard, enjoy connecting to free WiFi in your room or relaxing poolside while sipping drinks from the pool bar or terrace.
Budget: Jungle Beach Hotel Manuel Antonio
Jungle Beach Hotel Manuel Antonio is a 3-star hotel nestled right by the ocean. You’ll enjoy plenty of amenities during your stay, like a roundtrip airport shuttle, a terrace, and a garden.
You’ll also have free in-room WiFi access, as well as dry cleaning/laundry services and a bar. My friend stayed here with her family during spring break in 2023 and absolutely loved it!
Other hotel perks include an outdoor pool, cooked-to-order breakfast (surcharge), tour/ticket assistance, multilingual staff, luggage storage, concierge services, and a front desk safe.
Family Tip: The beach has kid-friendly waves, family rooms sleep up to five people, and everyone gets a welcome drink!
When you book a room at Jungle Beach Hotel Manuel Antonio, you can expect premium bedding and air conditioning as well as in-room amenities like coffee/tea makers, ceiling fans, and daily housekeeping.
Vacation Rentals
Need a place with a bit more room and privacy on your vacation? Consider a vacation rental instead of a hotel!
WORLD FAMOUS 727 Airplane Jungle Fuselage
You can eat dinner next to an airplane in Manuel Antonio, but did you know you can also sleep inside one there, too?!!
You’ll get to wake up to the howler monkeys and have coffee with the playful spider and white-faced monkeys.
There’s a fully equipped kitchen, flat-screen TV, a total of 3 Queen beds, and 2 large outdoor over the wing deck/balconies of polished teak and handcrafted furnishings make this flight of fancy truly unforgettable vacation home.
Family Tip: This vacation rental also offers free internet and access to a pool.
Monkeys, sloths, agoutis, and over 184 species of birds will become your neighbors in your private jungle paradise.
A quick walk downhill from your room will take you to the white sand beach, as well as the shops and nightlife of Manuel Antonio.
Costa Verde Hotel is right next door and offers 3 pools (one adults-only), 4 restaurants, maid service, and tour/concierge services. All this is within a few minutes walk or by a call to the bilingual front desk.
Dos Palmas Villa
If you’re looking for something a bit more basic, Dos Palmas at Jungle Creek is a great choice. The home is surrounded by jungle so you wont’ get an ocean view, but you’ll certainly have a chance to see wildlife from the patio!
With 1,200 square feet of living space, this unit features two air-conditioned deluxe bedrooms, a spacious bathroom, office space, a full kitchen with a separate dining area, and a comfortable living room with a TV.
Family Tip: The house sleeps five and includes a shared pool and deck, creek-side walking paths, and laundry facilities on site.
The owners live in a separate home on the property, so you’ll even get to meet their two super friendly golden retrievers. With tall ceilings, the home feels large and airy so you’ll enjoy plenty of space on your vacation.
Whatever your budget, there’s sure to be an accommodation option that’s perfect for you in Manuel Antonio!
Where to Eat in Manuel Antonio
In addition to El Avion, which I listed above as a thing to do, because it’s such a cool experience, we also found a few other places that are not only kid-friendly but also have pretty decent food!
El Patio de Cafe Milagro
This was our favorite breakfast spot in Manuel Antonio. They also serve lunch and dinner, but I can’t speak to those. Our friends had lunch here with their kids after we recommended it, and said they liked it a lot.
Everything we ordered was good, but our favorites were the breakfast burrito, breakfast sandwich, and banana/macadamia nut pancakes. Their smoothies are also delicious, and the servers are all so incredibly nice.
We came here for Little Man’s birthday breakfast and they even gave him a special birthday surprise just because our server overheard us talking about his birthday.
El Chino Pizzero
Our neighbor told us about this spot, not because it’s good but because it’s weird. They serve both pizza and Chinese food! Well, pizza, fried rice, and chop suey anyway. Little Man calls this the Chinizza (ch-eye-neet-za) restaurant.
He eats pizza while we get Chinese. It’s reasonably priced and pretty tasty, actually. On our first visit, each of us ordered a combo meal that came with a small drink.
Our server upgraded us to a 2L of soda (or pop, depending on where you’re from) at no extra charge!
I don’t know if this is a common practice there, but we appreciate it! We took the extra that we didn’t drink back to our apartment, and it certainly made us return again.
El Wagon Restaurant
Although it’s located right next to El Avion, the sunset views aren’t quite as good. But the wood-fired pizza is delicious. We ordered three pizzas for the three of us and had over an entire pizza to take home.
Fun Fact: Little Man is now in love with four cheese pizzas because of El Wagon.
Plus, they have an actual old-fashioned wooden train car that you can eat inside! It’s even air-conditioned if you really want cool dining temps.
This is unusual as pretty much every restaurant in Manuel Antonio is fully open-air, which we love.
Manuel Antonio Falafal Bar
This spot is the best-reviewed restaurant in all of Manuel Antonio. It’s located on the main road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio, and it’s pretty small.
They don’t take reservations, so be sure to get there early as the line can get pretty long.
The falafel here is incredible, as are the fresh smoothies. I ordered a strawberry mango smoothie and it was like drinking a little bit of heaven. The service is also super fast, which is great when you’re hungry!
Samui Thai
The sunset views at Samui are simply stunning. They’re located across the street from El Patio del Cafe Milagro, and their dining area overlooks the Pacific.
When we went with friends, we even saw a pair of scarlet macaws resting in the trees just before sunset!
Not everyone would consider Samui Thai kid-friendly. However, they let you order side dishes like sticky rice and steamed broccoli.
Between those and the chicken satay appetizer, Little Man was totally satisfied with this dinner. He even liked the fried tofu!
Pro Tip: They even offer a 2×1 happy hour from 4-6 pm, while you enjoy the sunset.
David got the green curry and I got the Pad Thai. It was all really, really good. We haven’t had great Thai food since we left Malaysia, and this place was pretty close to what we miss.
Getting to Manuel Antonio
The closest airport to Manuel Antonio is in Quepos, which is about a 20-minute drive away. You can take a taxi from the airport, hire a private driver to pick you up, or rent a car and drive yourself.
If you’re staying in San Jose, you can either fly into Quepos or take an intercity bus. We drove our own car, so I can’t speak to the buses.
However, other people we’ve talked to have told us that they are comfortable, safe, relatively timely, and affordable.
Getting Around Manuel Antonio
Most of the things to do in Manuel Antonio are located within walking distance of each other, which is one of the things we love about this town!
However, there are a few things that are located outside of walking distance and you may want to consider renting a car or taking a taxi for those.
There is also a local bus that runs from Quepos to the national park. It runs all day and costs 340 colones. Cash only. Try to have exact change, as the bus drivers don’t always have some to give you.
Budget for Manuel Antonio
In Manuel Antonio, expect to pay anywhere from 30 – 300 USD a night for a room and 10 – 30 USD per person for a meal. Our family of three averaged $40-$50 USD every time we ate out, even for breakfast.
Most things to do in Manuel Antonio have an entrance fee, including the national park and waterfalls. In Costa Rica, you’ll usually be able to pay in both USD and Colones.
Pro Tip: The currency in Costa Rica is Colones. Save up a lot of exchange fees by converting your own local currency to Colones with a Wise card.
You can withdraw Colones from an ATM in Costa Rica or pay by card at almost all businesses with that credit card. By default, some restaurants charge USD rather than Colones.
However, if you ask to have the bill adjusted to Colones, you will see a noticeable reduction in the overall price.
Manuel Antonio Travel Tips
- You can reach Manuel Antonio from San Jose in 3 hours by flying to the local airport or taking the bus. Buses depart at 6 AM, 9 AM, Noon, 2:30 PM, 6 PM, and 7:30 PM from Calle 5, AV 19/20 Terminal Transportes Tracopa.
- You might also rent a car in San Jose and drive. The route travels on two major highways, both of which are paved.
👉 I recommend using Discover Cars for renting a car on your trip!
- The busiest times in Manuel Antonio are mid December – April and July/August. The quietest times are usually September – November.
- Bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and mosquito repellent for this portion of Costa Rica. Also, make sure to bring a lot of lightweight clothing that dries quickly.
- In the rainy season, it is generally sunny in the morning and rains in the late afternoon. For ideal weather, go on excursions as soon as possible.
