Travel Tips for Taking Tikal Tours from Flores

I recommend taking a guided tour with a reputable company, such as the ones I’ve included in this article, to learn more about the history and culture of this incredible site.

Depending on your schedule and preferences, you can choose either a day trip or an overnight stay in the park. Keep in mind, the travel time is around one hour and thirty minutes each way from Flores, so plan accordingly.

If you want to take a local bus or taxi to the park to keep costs down, keep in mind that you cannot hire a guide on-site at Tikal. So if you don’t go on a guided tour, you’ll just be wandering around the ruins and exploring Tikal without a guide.

When packing for the trip, be sure to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes for the long walks and hikes throughout the park. Also, bring mosquito repellent and sunscreen, as the bugs and the sun can be intense.

Avoid buying bottled water before you go to the park because it’s not allowed. Instead, bring a reusable water bottle to refill at the stations available throughout the park.

Tikal National Park is home to some of the most impressive ancient Mayan ruins, and I suggest visiting the Great Plaza, Temple IV, and the Lost World. Climbing Temple IV was by far my favorite part of the day!

The Great Plaza features several towering structures, including the Temple of the Jaguar, which offers breathtaking views of the park. Temple IV is the tallest structure in the park, providing stunning panoramic views of the surrounding jungle canopy.

Lastly, the Lost World is a must-see, featuring an unusual pyramid-shaped structure with intricate carvings depicting Mayan mythology and history.

Tikal National Park holds a special place in my heart, with its rich history and magnificent ruins that have stood the test of time. It’s hard to believe that a thriving civilization once called this place their home.

I hope these tips and recommendations help you plan your visit to Tikal and make the most out of your experience. Enjoy the journey!
