Blurring the Lines Between Work and Play: The Rise of ‘Bleisure’ Travel

Do you work while you travel? You may be part of the rise of the new bleisure travel trend!

For digital nomads and remote workers, the world has become their office. This has given rise to a new form of travel: the ‘bleisure’ trip.

Mixing business and leisure, these blended trips allow travelers to incorporate work while still enjoying coveted vacation time.

Bleisure Travel Survey

According to a recent survey by Squaremouth, bleisure travel is on the rise. 43% of respondents reported already taking a work/leisure combo trip, while 24% plan to embark on one in the next year.

With remote work flexibility, travelers can now mix and match how they blend work and play.

Most prefer tacking extra vacation days onto a business trip, transforming a once mundane work conference into a chance to explore a new destination.

Others choose to work remotely from enticing locations like the Caribbean or European countryside. A lucky few live a true digital nomad lifestyle, working and traveling simultaneously. Like us! Or my friend Bethany.

Bleisure Work Tips

While blending work and leisure has its perks, it also requires some finesse. Digital nomads need strategies to balance work and personal time when office and itinerary are one.

Experts suggest clearly separating work hours from recreation. Maintaining some structure helps ward off burnout and keep productivity consistent, even when you’d rather be sightseeing.

Other tips include being transparent with managers about goals and availability, packing work-friendly versatile clothing, and leveraging flexible accommodations like long-term rentals with office space and WiFi.

With the right expectations and tools, ‘bleisure’ travelers can successfully mix business with pleasure.

Thoughts on Bleisure Travel

Bleisure trips allow remote workers to maximize their location independence. Blending work and vacation time means more opportunities to experience the world with less vacation days used up.

For digital nomads who crave adventure and human connection, it’s an alluring best-of-both blend.

Will ‘bleisure’ be the new way we all travel in the remote work era? Time will tell, but current data shows the mixes of work and play are clearly on the rise.

For now, remote workers can relish the freedom to combine business and leisure on their own terms – and maybe log in from a beach house now and then.
