We’ve visited both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. A few times. They’re both amazing and well worth a visit (or two). But that doesn’t really help you figure out which one to choose first.

So let’s compare various features of each of these islands around Cancun so you can pick the best one for your interests.

About Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, meaning “Island of Women,” is a picturesque small island situated only 15 minutes away from Cancun. It’s easy to go from Cancun to Isla Mujeres by ferry.

The name was given to the island by Spanish settlers who discovered numerous images and statues of goddesses upon their arrival.

These remnants date back to when Isla Mujeres held religious significance for Mayans as it was considered sacrosanct to the Maya goddess of childbirth and medicine.

Although shorter in length than Ile de Cozumel, at under 5 miles, Isla Mujeres provides visitors with various dining options, shopping experiences, and all-inclusive resorts.

Isla Mujeres is renowned for its gorgeous beaches, snorkeling trips, catamaran tours, private yacht charters, and numerous exciting Isla Mujeres activities.

If you’re looking for the most beautiful beaches on Isla Mujeres, head to the northwest side of the island where you’ll find Playa Norte.

This beach offers stunning crystal clear waters and white sand that will take your breath away.

About Cozumel

Cozumel is the largest island in Mexico’s Caribbean, located about 7 miles east of Playa del Carmen.

How big is Cozumel? At 30 miles long, Cozumel Island Mexico is more developed on the west side, where you’ll find San Miguel de Cozumel, the island’s largest town and main city center.

Thanks to its stunning Caribbean beaches, incredible coral reefs, and jungle landscapes, Cozumel is a popular tourist destination for beach lovers and sun-seekers alike.

Cozumel is one of the most popular cruise ship destinations in the Caribbean, and it received over two million visitors in 2022.

The island’s abundance of snorkeling and scuba diving sites attracts tourists from all over the world.

The coral reefs surrounding Cozumel are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which is second only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef in terms of size.

They’re also a part of the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park, so the entire area is protected by the Mexican government.

But there are still plenty of Isla Mujeres things to do – from lounging on the beach all day to exploring the Mayan heritage sites. So if you’re looking for a hassle-free holiday, this is the place for you.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Location

Isla Mujeres is located just off the coast of Cancun, about a 20-minute ferry ride away. We’ve taken the ferry a few times, and it’s very easy to navigate.

The ferry port is very easy to get to from the Cancun International Airport, too.

Cozumel, on the other hand, is located a bit south of Cancun near Playa del Carmen. It’s accessible from Playa del Carmen by both ferry and plane.

You can also fly directly into the Cozumel International Airport through several major airlines.

If your family is looking for a slightly more remote island experience, Cozumel might be the better option.

Is Isla Mujeres worth a day trip? Absolutely! Especially if you’re looking to add some fun day trips to your Cancun itinerary or want an island that’s easy to get to from Cancun.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Geography and Size

Isla Mujeres is just 4.3 miles long and about half a mile wide, making the Isla Mujeres size pretty compact. It’s an easy-to-explore island.

We drove around the island in less than a day and did pretty much all the tourist activities there are outside of Centro.

Cozumel, on the other hand, is much larger. It’s about 27 miles long and 10 miles wide, making it a bit more challenging to get around in a short period of time.

We spent an entire day driving around it, with a few sightseeing stops along the way. We could easily have gone at a slower pace and done even more activities around the island, too.

Both islands are fairly flat. The roads are paved, well-maintained, and easy to navigate. But if your family is looking for more variety of outdoor activities, Cozumel’s size gives it a slight edge.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Safety

The United States Mexico travel advisory warns of potential criminal activity and violence in popular Riviera Maya tourist destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

However, it does not specifically list Isla Mujeres or Cozumel as areas of risk.

According to Numbeo, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres boast high safety levels and low crime indices. This basically means that they are lovely places to visit.

Crime Index: Isla Mujeres: 11.76 (Very Low) vs Cozumel: 34.17 (Low)

Compared to Isla Mujeres, Cozumel has slightly higher crime rates and a lower safety index. However, both islands are considered very safe compared to other destinations in Mexico.

You should always exercise caution when traveling to any new place, and Mexico is no exception. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid breaking the law, and don’t let your possessions out of your sight.

This includes securing valuables in your hotel room and keeping a close eye on your belongings at the beach.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Getting Around

If your family enjoys exploring an island on foot or by golf cart, Isla Mujeres is a great choice. We have explored it top to bottom both by foot and by golf cart, although I’d recommend the latter with younger kids in tow.

Cozumel is a bit more challenging to get around, as it’s much larger than Isla Mujeres. Cozumel absolutely requires a car to see anything outside the main tourist drag where the cruise ships and ferries drop off.

We rented a car for a day on Cozumel to see all the stuff further away from town and then spent the rest of the time walking or taking taxis.

I don’t recommend taking taxis on Isla Mujeres if you can help it, though. There are no meters and the drivers will likely overcharge you.

Getting around both islands is pretty easy, depending on your budget. If you’re looking for a larger island with more to see and do, Cozumel is worth considering.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Beaches

Both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel are known for their beautiful beaches.

An advantage that both Isla Cozumel and Isla Mujeres have in relation to other beaches is that there is usually none of the gross red seaweed that plagues a majority of Riviera Maya beaches most of the year.

Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is especially popular with families, thanks to its gentle waves and sandy shores. As a bonus, the long sandy beach is so big that it can be crowded and still allow you your own space.

On Cozumel, the beaches are smaller but still enjoyable. Families often flock to Playa Palancar, which offers a reef for snorkeling just offshore.

Or head to Paradise Beach for a little bit of everything—swimming, floating water parks, restaurants, and more! It’s one of the best beaches Cozumel Mexico has to offer.

It’s important to remember that the eastern beaches on both islands are often rocky with much stronger currents. They might have pretty views of the ocean, but they’re mostly unusable for swimming.

So, when you’re thinking about which island has better beaches, it’s really only the western ones that you should compare.

If your family enjoys spending time on the beach, either island would make a great choice. But if snorkeling is high on your list of priorities, Cozumel is the better bet.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Activities

Isla Mujeres is pretty quiet, which can be great if your family is looking to relax on vacation. But if you’re looking for more things to do in Isla Mujeres, there are still plenty of options.

In addition to lounging on the beach, you can explore the island by golf cart, visit the turtle farm, go parasailing, or take a glass-bottom boat tour over the MUSA underwater museum.

Depending on the time of year, you can also go snorkeling with whale sharks from Isla Mujeres. We did it in 2021 and had a fabulous time! Cozumel is too far south for that excursion, though.

Cozumel, on the other hand, is packed with things to do.

In addition to snorkeling, take a stingless bee sanctuary, visit one of the island’s many beach clubs, or explore the ancient ruins at San Gervasio. You can even go Cozumel sailing!

Regarding diving Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel, the latter is a better choice. You can even get certified on Cozumel!

If your family is looking for a more active vacation, Cozumel is the better choice. But if you’re looking to relax and take it easy, Isla Mujeres is a great option.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Food

Both Cozumel and Isla Mujeres offer a variety of dining options, from casual beachside eateries to upscale restaurants.

On Isla Mujeres, be sure to try the chilaquiles for breakfast at Rooster. It was one of our favorite spots during our stays there.

Cozumel’s dining scene is a bit more diverse, thanks to the many cruise ships that visit the island. In addition to seafood, you’ll find Italian, Mexican, and even Tex-Mex cuisine.

And of course, no trip to Cozumel is complete without a stop at one of the many beachside bars for a refreshing margarita.

No matter which island you choose, you’ll be able to enjoy some delicious food. But if your family enjoys menus more aligned with American pallets, Cozumel is the better choice.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Mayan Ruins

Like most of mainland Riviera Maya, Both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel have Mayan ruins on them.

On Isla Mujeres, you can visit the small but interesting site of Ixchel. While it’s not as large or well-preserved as some of the other sites in the area, it’s still worth a visit.

The views from the top of the Punta Sur Lighthouse not far from the temple are especially beautiful.

Cozumel’s main archaeological site is San Gervasio, which was once a major center for the worship of the goddess Ixchel. Today, it’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists, thanks to its well-preserved ruins and beautiful setting.

If your family enjoys visiting ancient ruins, both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel are worth considering. But if you’re looking for a more comprehensive archaeological experience, Cozumel is the better choice.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Shopping

Both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel offer a variety of shopping options, from souvenir shops to art galleries.

On Isla Mujeres, be sure to visit Hacienda Mundaca, an art gallery and boutique that features the work of local artists. It’s a great place to find unique souvenirs.

Cozumel’s main shopping area is located in the town of San Miguel. Here you’ll find a variety of shops selling everything from souvenirs to jewelry to Cuban cigars.

If you’re looking to do some serious shopping, Cozumel is a better choice.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Nightlife

If your family is looking for a lively nightlife scene, Cozumel seems like the better choice at face value. The island is home to a variety of bars and clubs, many of which stay open until the early hours of the morning.

Isla Mujeres is a bit more low-key, but there are still plenty of options for nightlife. The island has a handful of bars and clubs, as well as live music venues.

And if you’re looking for something truly unique, be sure to check out the Ice Bar. We went with Little Man when he was nine, and all three of us had a blast. They even let him in for free!

So which island is better for nightlife? In my opinion, they’re a tie in this category. We visited bars on both islands during the daytime with our kid in tow, and saw other families doing the same.

After hours, though, it’s a different vibe that I can’t speak to. However, I saw plenty of options on both islands that looked like a lot of fun!

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Cost

Compared to Cozumel Isla Mujeres is a bit cheaper, although the cost of lodging will vary depending on the time of year you visit. In general, you can expect to pay less for accommodations, food, and activities on Isla Mujeres.

Cozumel is a bit more expensive, but it’s still affordable for most families. The increased cost is due in part to the fact that many of the activities on the island require a guide or driver, which can add to the cost.

Both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel are great choices for families looking for an affordable vacation. But if you’re looking to save a bit of money, Isla Mujeres is the better choice.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Places to Stay

There are a variety of lodging options on both Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, from all-inclusive resorts to boutique hotels.

Staying on Isla Mujeres offers visitors a tranquil and picturesque experience.

On Isla Mujeres, we stayed at the Posada del Mar, a small hotel with a pool that was across the street from Playa Norte. It was the perfect place for our family of three.

Isla Mujeres has a mix of rustic and boutique hotels, with rates slightly higher than Cozumel’s (due to fewer choices).

However, Cozumel has far more all-inclusive resorts than Isla Mujeres which drives up its average overall price.

Note: Most travelers to Isla Mujeres pay $100-$150 per night for double occupancy rooms, but vacation rentals are much cheaper, starting at around $20 per night for a one-bedroom apartment.

Cozumel has a wider range of lodging options, from budget-friendly hotels to luxurious resorts. Most of the resorts on Cozumel are all in or very near the town of San Miguel de Cozumel.

You can find hotels starting at $30 per night and going up to $300+ per night for 5-star accommodations. On average, you would pay $60-$130 for a double occupancy room.

If you want something different, there are also private rentals available either in town or on the outskirts of the island. These vacation rentals range in nightly price from $20 (for a studio) to over $500 (for an entire luxury villa).

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Day Trips

If you’re visiting Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or elsewhere in Riviera Maya, you might also be wondering if a Cozumel vs Isla Mujeres day trip is better.

Isla Mujeres is a great day trip from Cancun, but is less convenient if you’re staying further south.

It’s still possible to do, especially if you hire a private driver to pick you up at your hotel and drive you straight to the ferry terminal.

Regardless of where you’re originating, Isla Mujeres is absolutely worth a visit. You can have a lot of fun on the island, whether you want to ride around in a golf cart or spend the whole day at Playa Norte.

Cozumel, on the other hand, is a great day trip especially from Playa del Carmen but also from Tulum. If you’re staying in Playa del Carmen, you can walk to the ferry terminal in Centro.

If you’re staying at a resort outside of town, you’ll need to hire a driver to pick you up there.

Note: Don’t rent a car or rent a jeep to drive into Playa del Carmen Centro because parking is a nightmare and you won’t find anywhere to park near the ferry terminal.

You can take the ADO bus from Tulum directly to the Cozumel ferry terminal on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. The bus ride is about 1.5 hours and costs around $8 USD per person.

Overall, we loved day-tripping to Cozumel because we could explore the island at our own pace for the day and there was always enough to keep us busy.

In comparing Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, I noticed that there are some often-asked questions and I want to address them here.

Is snorkeling better in Cozumel or Isla Mujeres?

The snorkeling is better in Isla de Cozumel, hands down. Isla Mujeres does have a few good snorkeling spots, but Cozumel’s reefs are more plentiful and easier to get to.

You can even snorkel right from shore on Cozumel, although the best spots are further out and only accessible on a snorkeling tour.

We snorkeled at three different spots in Cozumel: Palancar reef, Colombia reef, and Paradise reef. All three were great and we saw tons of fish each time.

Isla Mujeres is better known for its unique snorkeling experiences, like whale sharks and MUSA. You can even snorkel with sailfish, but I can’t personally speak to it. A friend went, though, and said it was pretty amazing!

Is Isla Mujeres Worth Visiting?

Yes, Isla Mujeres is worth it! It’s a beautiful island with plenty to see and do.

Isla Mujeres, in addition to its lovely beaches and clear blue waters, is also an official “pueblo magico”, or magical town.

This designation is given by the government to towns in Mexico that boast charm and character. And Isla Mujeres has it in droves!

Whether you want to lounge on the beach, explore the island, or go on some exciting excursions, there’s something for everyone on Isla Mujeres.

Is Cozumel Worth Visiting?

Yes, Cozumel is worth it! There’s so much to do on the island, from snorkeling and scuba diving to exploring the town or just relaxing on a beach park. Cozumel is a great place to visit on a day trip or an extended vacation.

There are plenty of hotels and resorts to choose from, so you can find one that fits your budget and style. And with its convenient location, Cozumel is easy to get to from both Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Is there a ferry from Isla Mujeres to Cozumel?

There is no Isla Mujeres to Cozumel ferry. So if you’re wondering “how long is the ferry ride from Cozumel to Isla Mujeres?” then you’re out of luck. There isn’t a direct boat from Cozumel to Cancun either.

However, you can take a ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen, hire a driver to transport you from the Playa del Carmen ferry terminal to the Cancun ferry terminal, and then take the ferry to Isla Mujeres.

That entire trip will take about three hours, so I only recommend it if you’ll be spending at least a couple of days on each island.

You can also hire a plane to fly you directly between the Cozumel airport and the Isla Mujeres airport.

What is the best time of year to visit Isla Mujeres or Cozumel?

The best time of year to visit Isla Mujeres and Cozumel is during the winter months, from December to February.

The weather is warm but not too hot, and there are fewer tourists than during the summer.

Of course, if you want to avoid the crowds completely, you can always visit during the off-season. This is less of a possibility nowadays, though, as the entire Riviera Maya region received a record number of tourists in 2022.

The weather is still pleasant in Isla Mujeres and Cozumel during the summer months, but it can be quite hot and humid.

If you do visit during the summer, make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated.

Which island is easier to get to?

Isla Mujeres is easier to get to than Cozumel, at least from Cancun. There are multiple ferries per day from various places in Cancun, including the hotel zone, and the ride only takes about 20 minutes.

Where is Cozumel? Off the coast of Playa del Carmen. To get to Cozumel, you’ll have to take a ferry from either Playa del Carmen, which takes a little longer than the Isla Mujeres ferry from Cancun.

Or you can fly into the Cozumel airport, although there aren’t always commercial flights every day and they’re usually more expensive than flying into Cancun.

Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel: Which is Best for Your Family Vacation?

So, which island is better for your family vacation – Isla Mujeres or Cozumel?

It really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want a more affordable vacation, go to Isla Mujeres. If you want a wider range of activities and lodging options, go to Cozumel.

And if you’re looking for a day trip from Cancun or elsewhere in Riviera Maya, either one is really a great choice. We haven’t seen anything comparable even driving through South America.

We’ve done both Cozumel vs. Isla Mujeres day trips and I honestly can’t pick a favorite. They each have some cool adventure parks, too.

When I’m asked questions like “Is Isla Mujeres worth it?” or “Is Cozumel worth it?” the answer is a resounding “Yes!” to both! We have really enjoyed our visits to both islands as a family.
