You’ve come to the right place! My family and I lived there for nearly a year, and we encountered a wide variety of Mexico rainforest animals that we hadn’t seen before.
If you’ve ever visited or lived in the Riviera Maya, Mexico before, then you know just how amazing animals in Playa del Carmen can be. The animals Riviera Maya has in it offer a rich and immersive wildlife experience.
From the vibrant tropical birds to the curious coatis and capybara in Mexico that roam around, it’s an animal lover’s paradise!
Thirteen individual species of animals in Playa del Carmen play an integral part in the Mayan cosmogony. These same creatures are also represented as constellations within the Mayan zodiac.

Marine Animals in Playa del Carmen
The best way to see any of these aquatic creatures in Playa del Carmen is to either visit one of the animal sanctuaries or eco-parks, or to book a guided tour.
1. Sea Turtles
The nearby sea village of Akumal is the best place to see turtles in Playa del Carmen. Well, near Playa del Carmen. Akumal is about a 15-minute drive south of the town.

The waters around this area are home to numerous species of turtles, including green and loggerhead sea turtles, which can often be seen swimming close to shore or basking in the sun on the white sand beaches.
These animals in Playa del Carmen have been living in harmony with the locals for centuries, and it’s truly an incredible experience to spend just a few minutes observing them in their natural environment.
If you visit at the right time of year, you can even go down to select beaches at night to watch baby turtles hatch and swim out to sea.
2. Manatee
Home to some of the most beautiful manatees in Mexico, Playa del Carmen is the perfect place to observe these gentle giants. Manatees are endemic to the Mexican Caribbean!
The Xel-Ha Eco Park on the Riviera Maya coastline is a great place to start your manatee adventure. Here, you can see the manatees in their saltwater oceanarium and get up close and personal with these majestic creatures.
If you want to see wild manatees, there aren’t any in Playa del Carmen. However, the mangroves of Sian Ka’an Biosphere Preserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Center, are a great place to see them leisurely floating along in their natural environment.

3. Dolphin
If you want to see wild dolphins in their natural habitat, there are several options available for dolphin-watching tours off the Yucatan Coast from Playa del Carmen.

The most commonly seen wild dolphin species seen in Playa del Carmen are the spotted and bottlenose dolphins, although you might also be lucky enough to see pilot whales or other marine wildlife in Playa del Carmen.
There are also several dolphinariums and eco-parks with captive animals. These have been bred in captivity, and I don’t recommend them. None of the dolphinariums in Riviera Maya have large enough living spaces for the dolphins.
4. Whale Shark

Swimming with wild whale sharks was one of the coolest things we did while living in Playa del Carmen. These gentle giants visit the Playa del Carmen area every year, from June 1st to September 15th.
👉 During this time, take part in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with these gentle giants.
When swimming with whale sharks, there are a few things you should keep in mind.
First and foremost, it’s important to remember that these animals are wild and must be respected. It’s also important to stay at least six feet away from them at all times.
And, it’s best to wear a wetsuit or rash guard when snorkeling so that you don’t accidentally touch the whale shark or startle it in any way.
This will also protect you from UV rays in the hot, Mexican sun.
Common Animals in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is home to many animals, both on land and in the water.
As you explore this unique region, you may encounter animals in Playa del Carmen such as freshwater turtles, parrots, iguanas, coatis, and even jaguars.
You can also spot animals in Playa del Carmen during your everyday life while vacationing there. Here are some of the most common animals you’ll likely see on your trip.
5. Howler Monkey
The howler monkey is a species of primate found in Playa del Carmen. They are the loudest animals in the rainforest and can be heard from miles away!
You may hear one – or more! – in Playa del Carmen but never actually see them.
These animals have black or brown fur with pale yellow undersides. They live in groups known as troops and feed mainly on leaves, fruit, nuts, and insects.
You may be lucky enough to spot these animals in Playa del Carmen in the wild but you can also take full-day tours to a reserve where you’ll have the chance to observe Playa del Carmen monkeys, including howlers, in their natural habitat.
6. Spider Monkey
If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, seeing wild spider monkeys in Playa del Carmen is a must.

Tours depart from Playa del Carmen or elsewhere in Rivera Maya. This is where you’ll have the chance to observe other Playa del Carmen wildlife.
The Jungle Place Spider Monkey Sanctuary Playa del Carmen is the other best place to go to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.
This sanctuary provides food and shelter for the endangered spider monkey species that have been rescued.
7. Bats
Bats are a common sight in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The most commonly found species include the Brazilian Free-tailed Bat, the Mexican Long-nosed Bat, and the Cave Myotis.
The Brazilian Free-tailed Bat is a small, insectivorous bat found in many parts of Mexico. It roosts in large colonies in caves, mines, and buildings.
The Mexican Long-nosed Bat is a migratory species that feeds on flowers and nectar from cacti and agaves.
Finally, the Cave Myotis eats insects and is found in caves located throughout central Mexico. It is a small bat with a distinctive nose.
Although bats can be intimidating to some people, they are actually harmless animals in Playa del Carmen that help keep insect populations under control.
Don’t forget to look up at the night sky. You may spot a bat eating some mosquitos!
8. White Nosed Coati
These diurnal creatures have become a bit of a plague at all-inclusive resorts throughout Playa del Carmen. They’re one of the most common Playa del Carmen animals in Mexico resorts.
Their populations exploded when the hotels were mostly empty during the pandemic.
Now that humans have returned to their gluttonous dining habits at the various resorts and restaurants, the fearless coatis are often seen stalking dining tables and trash cans.
The animals are cute, especially the babies, and can often be seen in packs. However, they can be dangerous if provoked.
So, if you see one while out exploring, it’s probably best to admire them from a distance.
Do NOT feed them or toss them table scraps. This behavior makes them more aggressive toward humans.
9. Yucatan Squirrel
The Yucatan Squirrel is an arboreal species of rodent native to Mexico and Central America. Its fur ranges from light gray to black and it has a white stripe along its back, making it very distinctive.
It can often be seen running around palm trees in Playa del Carmen, as well as at other resorts throughout the region.
It is an important species in the local ecosystem, as its diet consists of fruits, nuts, and insects.
These animals in Playa del Carmen can be quite bold at times and may even approach people to beg for food.
If you are lucky enough to spot one on your trip, remember not to feed it or disturb it too much.
10. Iguana
The Iguana is a large lizard found throughout Mexico and Central America. It can be seen sunning itself on rocks near water bodies in Playa del Carmen, such as Xcaret or the beach at Maroma Bay.
They’re also often found at the various all-inclusive resorts throughout Playa del Carmen. We love seeing them relaxing throughout our favorite eco-resort there.
Iguanas are herbivorous animals in Playa del Carmen and are often seen grazing on vegetation.
They are harmless animals if left alone, but they can become aggressive if they feel threatened or are provoked.
It’s best to admire them from a distance and not attempt to get too close.
11. Central American Agouti
The Central American Agouti is a large rodent in Mexico and Central America. We first saw one at a friend’s wedding in Tulum several years ago!
It can often be seen scampering through the underbrush in Playa del Carmen, usually near water sources or in mangrove forests.
They remind me of a mix between a rabbit and a guinea pig. They have large rear haunches with long front legs like a bunny but a rat-like face like a guinea pig.
Agoutis are primarily herbivorous animals in Playa del Carmen that feed on nuts, fruits, and other vegetation.
You’re most likely to see one running away. Every time we’ve seen one it’s been running away, absolutely terrified!
12. Frogs
From the Central American Gulf Coast Toad to the Giant Toad, Sabinal Frog, Yellow Tree Frog, and more, Playa del Carmen is home to a wide variety of amphibians.
The Central American Gulf Coast Toad is one of the most common frogs in Playa del Carmen.
It’s a dark brown color with yellowish spots on its back and sides. It’s nocturnal and found near water like rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes.
Another interesting species is the Giant Toad which can grow up to 8 inches long! They have gray or olive-green skin with black spots or stripes on their backs.
These frogs are mainly terrestrial but they do need access to water for breeding purposes.
The Sabinal Frog is another species that can be found in Playa del Carmen. This frog has a bright yellow color with black spots on its back and sides.
It’s typically found near streams or rivers where it feeds on insects such as crickets and grasshoppers.
Finally, the Yellow Tree Frog is an arboreal species that lives in trees near bodies of water such as rivers or streams.
It’s a bright yellow color with black stripes running down its back and sides. It feeds on insects like ants and beetles but will also eat small fish if available.
13. Yucatan Salamander
The Yucatan salamander is a native animal of Mexico that you wouldn’t automatically expect to find in Playa del Carmen but it can be found living in the region’s cenotes and caves.
Sometimes it comes out of hiding and you can see it on a sidewalk or next to a path when you’re walking in the evenings.
This amphibian has a reddish-brown coloration with pale yellow stripes running down its back and sides. It feeds mainly on insects and is typically seen at night.
14. Butterflies
There are a wide variety of butterflies in Playa del Carmen, including the White-edged Red-ring, Little Banner, and more.
If you’re visiting the ancient Coba Mayan ruins, be sure to take a leisurely drive down Tulum and Chemax – Yucatan’s path less traveled.
You’ll find yourself admiring countless Orange-Yellow Sulphur butterflies feasting on nectar from vibrant flowers and succulent fruits along the way!
15. Capybara
The capybara is a large rodent native to Central and South America that can be found in Playa del Carmen. It has reddish-brown fur on its back and sides with pale yellow undersides.
It’s an amphibious species that loves the water and is usually seen near rivers, streams, or ponds. It feeds mainly on aquatic plants but will also eat fruit, nuts, and insects.
The capybara Playa del Carmen is a unique species that can be seen in the wild if you’re lucky enough to spot it!
We haven’t been fortunate enough to see one yet, but we keep looking when we’re in Playa del Carmen!
16. Boa Constrictor
The boa constrictor is a species of snake found in Playa del Carmen. It’s a large, non-venomous constrictor that can be seen slithering around the region’s forests and cenotes.
It’s allegedly common but we still haven’t seen one. They’re pretty good at camouflaging, though!
It has grayish-brown or tan scales with black splotches running down its back and sides. It feeds mainly on birds and small animals in Playa del Carmen, like rodents, but will also eat fish if available.
The boa constrictor is an incredible species to observe in the wild and you may be lucky enough to spot one if you visit Playa del Carmen! So keep your eyes peeled!
17. Orchid Bee
You may have seen this unique bee and not even realized it! The bee is bright, emerald green! It has a metallic sheen which is why it’s called the Orchid Bee.
These animals are found in tropical and subtropical climates such as in Playa del Carmen and can often be seen hovering around flowers, feeding on nectar.
They’re named after their favorite nectar flower, the orchid.
Strolling through Playa del Carmen’s lush jungles outside of town can be an awe-inspiring experience.
You just might have the fortune to spot this captivating, bright-green bee!
18. The Xoloitzcuintle
The Mexican Hairless Dog is a unique breed, celebrated as part of Mexico’s living heritage for its distinct lack of fur. It’s one of the animals native to Mexico on this list.
Some members of the breed have a little fur on their bodies while others are born with full fur coverage.
This breed of dog derives its name from Xolo (the Aztec deity of fire) and the ancient Nahuatl word “itzcuintli” – which translates to “dog.”
While these aren’t wild creatures that roam the streets of Playa del Carmen, they’re still a really special sight to see. They’re popular Cancun animals to have as pets for some locals.
Several residents throughout Playa del Carmen own one of these living heritage pups, so keep your eyes peeled as you stroll down 5th Avenue or elsewhere in Centro.
Dangerous Animals in Playa del Carmen
Although animals in Playa del Carmen aren’t as dangerous as other animals around the world, there are still animals that should be respected and avoided.
None of the dangerous animals in Playa del Carmen on this list are worth an epic Instagram shot that could likely go very wrong.
It’s important to remember that although these creatures may look harmless, they are wild animals in Mexico and should be treated with respect and caution at all times.
With proper knowledge and safety precautions, visitors can still enjoy observing these amazing creatures without putting themselves at risk.
19. Bull Sharks
Bull sharks are one of the most dangerous species of shark in the world and can be found in the shallow waters off the coast of Playa del Carmen from October/November to March. So January is a great time to see them!
They can grow up to 11 feet long and weigh up to 500 pounds.
They are known for their aggressive behavior and have been responsible for numerous attacks on humans over the years.
👉 Despite these dangers, some people choose to dive with bull sharks in Playa del Carmen as it offers a unique experience not found anywhere else.
The opportunity to get up close and personal with these majestic creatures is an unforgettable experience. However, it’s important to remember that diving with bull sharks is very risky.
It’s important to take all necessary safety precautions when diving with these animals in Playa del Carmen, such as wearing protective gear and following all instructions given by experienced guides.
It’s also important to remember that they are wild and unpredictable so caution should always be taken when entering their natural habitat.
20. Crocodiles
Crocodiles are a common sight in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Both the Mexican or Morelet’s crocodile and the American crocodile can be found in this region. They typically grow from two to nine feet in length!
In areas where crocodiles are known to frequent, you’ll typically see warning signs so you know to be extra vigilant.
Occasionally, there have been incidents of crocodiles attacking people in the Riviera Maya region.
One incident occurred when a tourist had to frantically swim back to shore after being chased by a crocodile off the coast of Playa del Carmen. These are very rare, though.
21. Jaguars
The Yucatan Peninsula is home to the majestic jaguar, the largest cat in North America. In Playa del Carmen, these big cats are making a comeback thanks to conservation efforts.
Private security cameras have captured footage of them wandering around the area, and Xcaret Park even has its own Jaguar Island where visitors can see these beautiful creatures in an enormous, wall-less ‘enclosure’.
Jaguar sightings are becoming more common in urban areas as well.
One local guy captured a jaguar on camera near Playa del Carmen, showing that these animals in Playa del Carmen are adapting to their changing environment.

22. Venomous Snakes
Playa del Carmen is home to a wide variety of snakes, including several species of venomous snakes.
While the more venomous Playa del Carmen snakes are not common, it’s important to be aware of them if you’re visiting.
Pitvipers are also present in Playa del Carmen, although they are rarely seen due to their nocturnal habits.
These Playa del Carmen snakes have distinctive triangular heads and heat-sensing pits between their eyes and nose that help them detect prey at night.
The Variable Coral Snake is another venomous snake found in Playa del Carmen, although it is quite rare.
It has a distinctive pattern of red, yellow, black bands along its body which makes it easy to identify from other species of snake in the area.
Finally, there is the Neotropical Rattlesnake which is found throughout Mexico including Playa del Carmen.
This snake has a characteristic rattle at the end of its tail which warns potential predators away when disturbed or threatened.
23. Spiders
Spiders are a common sight in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. While most of them are harmless, there are some that can be dangerous to humans.
These dangerous spiders include the Black Widow, Brown Recluse, Hobo Spider, Mexican Wandering Spider, Red Kneed Tarantula, and Wolf Spider.
Each of these spiders frequent dark places, like wood piles or under rocks, and can deliver painful bites.
Some can cause blisters or swelling while others cause necrosis or even death if the bite is untreated.
If you do get bitten by one of these spiders, seek medical attention immediately as some bites may require anti-venom treatment to avoid serious consequences such as death or tissue damage around the area of the bite.
24. Gila Monster
Native to the Southwestern United States and the Northwestern Mexican state of Sonora, this venomous lizard is heavy and slow-moving.
The Gila Monster Lizard can be found in arid areas of Mexico. It’s one of the animals in Cancun and Riviera Maya.
This lizard has a unique folklore surrounding it, as when Spanish conquistadors first saw it they believed its breath was poisonous.
It is considered one of the most dangerous animals in Mexico due to its venomous bite. Although it’s not aggressive towards humans, it will bite if provoked or threatened.
If you’re visiting Playa del Carmen, you may encounter one of these lizards while exploring the area.
While they are fascinating creatures to observe from a distance, it’s important to remember that these dangerous animals in Mexico Cancun can hurt you if approached.
Birds in Playa del Carmen
The birds in the Playa del Carmen area are incredibly diverse.
From brightly-colored parrots to delicate hummingbirds, there’s something for everyone to spot in Riviera Maya!

25. Pelicans
These are some of the most common birds that you’ll find in Playa del Carmen. These animals in Playa del Carmen usually congregate near the seashore where they can find food.
They are recognizable by their long, yellow beaks and the distinctive pouch that hangs from the lower mandible.
If you’re out on a boat or taking a stroll along the beach, keep your eyes peeled for these animals in Playa del Carmen and its surroundings as they make for some great photo opportunities!
26. Seagulls
Like pelicans, seagulls are most often seen near the ocean. These animals in Playa del Carmen are incredibly loud, so you definitely won’t miss them once they get close.
They have a variety of calls that they can make and they often follow boats in the hopes of getting some food scraps or catching some fish!
So when you’re out on the beach or taking a boat trip, keep your eyes peeled. They often congregate in large groups, too. Between their loud call and their big gatherings, it’s actually kind of hard to miss them!
27. Roseate Spoonbill
The Roseate Spoonbill is a large, pink and white bird with a distinctive long bill.
This animal is not very common in Playa del Carmen, but if you’re lucky enough to spot one it will be an unforgettable experience!
These animals usually prefer quiet wetlands and estuaries as their habitat so the best place to see them is near freshwater sources like rivers and lagoons.
So if you’re out exploring the area, be sure to keep an eye out for these beautiful creatures!
28. Turquoise-Browed Motmot
The Turquoise-Browed Motmot is a small bird with an unmistakable long tail and bright blue feathers. This species has been seen in Playa del Carmen, but it’s not overly common.
Because of its unique coloration, this animal stands out against the typically green foliage that surrounds it.
You’re most likely to find one in tropical forests or near water sources. We’ve only seen them at night on nature hikes with them help of a local guide!
If you do get a chance to see one, take some time to observe them and appreciate their unique coloring. And make sure to take a photo or two. It will be an experience you won’t forget!
29. Hummingbirds
In the Yucatán, hummingbirds of various stunning varieties flutter around.
These include the ruby-throated, cinnamon, green-breasted mango, white-bellied emerald, and rufous-tailed as well as buff-bellied species.
Hummingbirds are some of the most beautiful animals you can find in Playa del Carmen, so be sure to take a moment and admire them if you happen to see one.
If you’re lucky enough, you may even get to witness their courtship behavior as they flutter around each other and display their vibrant feathers. It really is a sight to behold!
30. Montezuma Oropendola
The Montezuma Oropendola is another bird species that you may be lucky enough to spot in Playa del Carmen.
These animals have a unique call that you’ll definitely recognize once you hear it.
These animals are usually found in tropical forests, mangroves, and coastal wetlands.
They often gather in large flocks and can be recognized by their vibrant yellow and black feathers.
So if you’re out exploring the jungle on one of the tours I mentioned above, like the Sian Ka’an day trip, there’s a chance you’ll spot these beautiful birds!
31. Pale-billed Woodpecker
The Pale-billed Woodpecker is another species to look out for during your time in Playa del Carmen.
These animals are larger than other woodpeckers and have red heads. They actually remind me of Woody the Woodpecker.
They can be found in the jungle or near large trees, where they feed on insects and other animals.
The best place to see them is near Xcaret Park, so if you’re planning a visit, be sure to keep an eye out for these unique birds of Playa del Carmen.
If you’re lucky enough to spot a Pale-billed Woodpecker, be sure to take some time to observe it and appreciate its beauty. It’s an animal that you won’t soon forget!
Rare Animals in Playa del Carmen
Here are some animals that do live in Playa del Carmen, but that you are very unlikely to see unless it’s in an animal sanctuary or eco-park.
32. Scarlet Macaw
The Scarlet Macaw is a beautiful and rare species of parrot native to the jungles of Central and South America.
They are most commonly found in southern Mexico, where they can still be spotted in some wild areas such as Playa del Carmen.
Most often, you’ll likely see it as a pet for tourist entertainment. Unfortunately, this isn’t a great way to help the wild species build its numbers, but it does happen.
If you do come across one of these birds in the wild, please refrain from feeding it or interacting with it in any way.
This is to ensure its safety and well-being, as well as that of other animals in the area.
33. Ocellated Turkey
The Ocellated Turkey is another rare animal in the Playa del Carmen area.
This species of turkey can usually be seen around waterholes and rivers, where it feeds on a variety of insects, small animals, and fruits.
Ocellated Turkeys can also be found in some of the bigger Mexico wildlife animals sanctuaries and eco-parks in Playa del Carmen. It’s much prettier than the varieties commonly found in the US and Canada!
This is a great way to get up close and personal with these animals without disturbing them or their natural habitat.
34. Margay Cats
Although these wild creatures are the size of housecats, they are nowhere near as docile. Margay cats are actually quite shy animals and can be difficult to spot in the wild.
These animals are most commonly found in areas of dense vegetation, such as the jungle regions around Playa del Carmen.
Their coloration is designed to help them blend in with their surroundings.
If you do happen to come across one of these animals, it’s best to keep your distance and not interact with it in any way. They’re cute but can also be pretty vicious.
35. Collared Pecary
The Collared Pecary is a species of wild pig native to the jungles of Central and South America.
These animals have black, tan fur with a distinctive white band around their necks, which gives them their name.
Like the farm pigs common throughout the US, they also like to lay in the mud at midday when it’s hottest. Unlike pigs in the US, though, they have much skinnier legs.
The Collared Pecary can be found in some parts of Playa del Carmen, so you may see one.
However, due to their shy nature, it’s pretty unlikely. Count yourself lucky if you do though!
We never saw any when we lived in Playa del Carmen, but did end up seeing some in Mocoa, Colombia. The babies are adorable!
36. Spotted Skunk
Unlike the singular striped skunk of the US and Canada, Mexico has a skunk with multiple stripes and spots.
It’s black all over its body with several white stripes on its torso as well as a white spot on its head.
If you do see one, steer clear because they can get just as stinky as their northern, striped counterparts.
They are also nocturnal animals, so you’re more likely to spot one at night when it’s out foraging for food.
So if you are living in Playa del Carmen or just visiting, be sure to keep an eye out for these animals!
Even though some of them may be hard to find and observe, there is always a chance that you’ll get super lucky!
37. Tapir
Although allegedly common to Playa del Carmen, these animals are more active at night.
Their coloration is perfect for blending in with the shadows and their nocturnal habits make them difficult to spot.
Tapirs are really interesting animals that feed on vegetation, fruit, insects, small animals, and even fish!
They usually live near water sources such as rivers and ponds so if you’re lucky enough to come across one, take a photo if you can before giving it the space to live its best life.
Rarely will you see them in the wild.
