Is there Uber in Guatemala?

Are you wondering ‘Is there Uber in Guatemala? Then you’ve come to the right place!

Everything you need to know about the world of ride-sharing, particularly Uber in Guatemala, is right here.

My family and I have traveled to Guatemala multiple times, including a memorable two-month stay during our Pan American Highway road trip.

And let me tell you, getting around that enchanting country can be quite an adventure!

When it comes to transportation in Guatemala, you’ll find a mix of traditional methods like taxis and public buses. But Uber’s been on the scene, too, since 2018!

So yes, there is Uber in Guatemala. But is Uber in Guatemala safe? And how does Uber work in Guatemala? Can you use it anywhere? Let’s discuss the ins and outs of using Uber in Guatemala in more detail!

What is Uber in Guatemala?

For those who might not be familiar with Uber, it’s a convenient and user-friendly app that connects passengers with drivers in their area.

With just a few taps on your smartphone, you can easily request a ride, track the driver’s location, and even estimate your fare upfront.

It’s a game-changer for travelers who want to explore Guatemala while enjoying the comfort and convenience of a private ride.

Uber’s Current Status in Guatemala

Uber currently operates in Guatemala, primarily in Guatemala City and Antigua as well as Panajachel (aka: Pana) on Lake Atitlan, and Quetzaltenango (aka: Xela).

In terms of licensing, it’s important to note that Uber has faced legal challenges in Guatemala. The taxi industry, like in many countries, has raised concerns about Uber’s entry into the market.

However, despite these challenges, Uber continues to operate and serve customers in several cities throughout the country.

It’s worth mentioning that Uber currently does not have any major competitors in Guatemala in the cities where it operates.

While there may be local taxi apps and services, Uber remains the dominant ridesharing service in the country.

Is there InDriver in Guatemala?

Yes, InDriver exists but doesn’t have the safeguards that Uber does.

Note: InDriver is a ridesharing app that allows riders and passengers to negotiate fares in advance of the driver committing to a pickup.

We tried it in Colombia. Drivers aren’t screened and tracked like Uber does, for passenger security. It’s just a matching app, so you also have to pay in cash only.

And you need to speak pretty good Spanish and know the going rates to negotiate a fare. I recommend avoiding it, mostly for safety reasons.

Pros and Cons of Using Uber in Guatemala

As more and more people opt to use ride-sharing services, it’s important to weigh the benefits and challenges of this mode of transportation.

On the one hand, ride-sharing services can save you time and money. However, there are also some downsides to using these services.

We’ll discuss them all so you can determine if using Uber in Guatemala is right for you.

💚 Benefits of Using Uber in Guatemala

👍 Convenience and Ease of Use

Uber provides a convenient transportation option in Guatemala, allowing users to easily request a ride with just a few taps on the app.

Whether you’re exploring Guatemala City or heading to the picturesque town of Antigua, Uber is readily accessible.

Day trips from Antigua Guatemala are a fun way to add extra adventure to your trip.
👍 Affordability

Uber can often be a more cost-effective option compared to traditional taxis in Guatemala.

With transparent pricing and the ability to estimate fares beforehand, users can have a better understanding of the cost of their rides, which can be particularly beneficial for budget travelers.

👍 Safety Measures

Uber implements safety features such as GPS tracking, driver ratings, and trip sharing, which can enhance passenger safety during the journey.

These measures can provide peace of mind, especially when traveling in unfamiliar surroundings.

👍 User-Friendly App

The Uber app is user-friendly and available in multiple languages, making it accessible to both locals and international visitors.

And it’s the same app you use in your home country, so no need to download a new app each country you visit! So far I’ve used my US-downloaded app in nine other Latin American countries. Including Guatemala.

The app’s interface allows for easy navigation, fare estimates, and cashless transactions, enhancing the overall convenience of using Uber in Guatemala.

👍 Enhanced Ride Experience

Uber offers various vehicle options, including standard cars, larger vehicles for groups, and even luxury options in some areas.

This variety allows users to choose the most suitable option based on their needs and preferences, making their journeys more comfortable and enjoyable.

❌ Challenges of Using Uber in Guatemala

👎 Legal Challenges and Opposition

Uber has faced legal challenges and opposition from the traditional taxi industry in Guatemala. There haven’t been any in recent years but it has been an issue in the past.

This can lead to occasional protests and tensions between Uber drivers and taxi associations, potentially causing disruptions or delays in service.

👎 Limited Availability

While Uber operates in major cities like Guatemala City and Antigua, availability may be limited in other regions of the country.

It’s important to check the app for the most up-to-date information on service areas and availability before relying on Uber for transportation.

👎 Cultural Considerations

In certain areas of Guatemala, particularly in more rural or remote regions, local customs, and cultural expectations may affect the use of ride-sharing services like Uber.

It’s important to be respectful of local customs and norms when using Uber in these areas to avoid any misunderstandings or conflicts.

👎 Language Barrier

Not all Uber drivers in Guatemala may be proficient in English, so communication can sometimes be a challenge for non-Spanish-speaking travelers.

In fact, during our most recent six-week stay, we only had two drivers who knew any English.

However, this can be mitigated by using basic Spanish phrases or utilizing translation apps, like Google Translate, to facilitate communication.

👎 Reliance on Internet Connectivity

Uber relies on internet connectivity for users to request rides and for drivers to navigate to the pick-up location.

In some remote areas or regions with weak internet coverage, it may be challenging to access the app or experience connectivity issues, affecting the availability and reliability of Uber service.

We noticed this at Hobbitenango, near Antigua. Several folks had taken Ubers there from Antigua Guatemala but couldn’t use the app to call one to pick them up.

Thankfully, several good taxi drivers know to be there to help people in that predicament!

Tips for using Uber in Guatemala

To make the most of your Uber experience in Guatemala, here are some handy tips. They’ll help you navigate Guatemala with ease and better enjoy the convenience and affordability that Uber offers.

First, download the Uber app on your smartphone and set up your account before arriving in the country. This will save you time and ensure you’re ready to request a ride as soon as you need one.

When using Uber in Guatemala, it’s important to prioritize your safety.

Before getting into the car, always double-check the driver’s name, photo, and license plate on the app to ensure you’re getting into the correct vehicle.

I always verbally confirm my driver’s name, too. Consider sharing your trip details with a friend or family member for added security.

Understanding fare estimates is also crucial. The Uber app provides an estimated price range for your journey. Things like traffic jams and tolls can affect the final price, so budget accordingly.

Alternatives to Uber in Guatemala

So, here’s the deal: when it comes to getting around in Guatemala City, Antigua, Xela, and Pana, Uber is often your best choice.

But what if you’re looking for alternatives? Well, here’s the scoop: there aren’t any other reputable ridesharing apps available in Guatemala just yet.

Remember, I suggested avoiding InDriver for safety reasons. But fear not! There are still plenty of options to consider.

Taxis

In cities and towns, traditional taxi services are readily available. They may not offer the same convenience as Uber, but they can still get you from point A to point B.

White taxis aren’t metered but yellow taxis are. For safety and to ensure you don’t get ripped off, only use yellow taxis. Unless you really enjoy the challenge of haggling over fares!

Yellow taxis are basically only available in Guatemala City, so if you’re going further afield you’ll have to negotiate with taxi drivers. So brush up on your Spanish!

Yellow taxis will always request a specific address and phone number, so make sure you have that information handy. “Taxis Amarillo” is the most trusted and reliable Guatemala taxi service we heard about on our last visit.

Just call 1766 to book a ride. Or you can email them to schedule a pickup in advance.

Public Transit

In Guatemala City, you can take red buses, Transmetro (white and green electric buses), and Transurbano (the public train system).

While they’re the cheapest, never take red buses. They’re notorious for being robbed.

And although Transmetro and Transurbano are allegedly more secure, and they have dedicated routes to get around the city more effectively, I can’t personally speak to their safety.

We housesat in Guatemala City for six weeks and were specifically told by the pet owner never to use any public transit in Guatemala City for safety reasons.

So I’ll share that same recommendation with you. In Guatemala City, stick to a private car…your own, a rental carair, or an Uber Guatemala.

Chicken Buses

Now, if you’re planning on traveling between cities, you might want to hop on a chicken bus. Yep, you heard that right – chicken buses!

These colorful, retrofitted school buses are a popular mode of transportation. They’re affordable, and you’ll definitely have stories to tell after riding one.

One guy we know actually had a fellow passenger hold one of her chickens. Alive and squawking. For over an hour until she got off the bus before he did. True story!

Just keep in mind that they can get crowded and the ride might not be the most comfortable. But hey, sometimes it’s all about the experience, right? 🐓

Pullman Buses

Pullmans are also known as first-class buses, coach buses, or express buses. They offer a more comfortable way to travel long distances.

You can use them more comfortably than chicken buses to get from one major center to another. Plus, they’re both safe and reliable.

If you’re planning to travel by Pullman bus in Guatemala, there are several companies to choose from. You can conveniently book your ticket online. Two great options are Litegua and Transportes Alamo.

Now, not all express buses provide the same amenities. However, you can usually expect air-conditioning and restrooms on board. And, many of them even offer wifi!

Tuk Tuks

We first saw these in Thailand but they’ve made their way to both Central America and South America in full force!

These zippy little three-wheeled vehicles are all over Antigua and other towns throughout Guatemala.

In Guatemala, they’re more often called moto taxis and whenever they see you walking anywhere, they’ll honk at you to suggest you get in for a ride to your destination.

Every town and city has officially designated moto taxis with a certain look to them. Be sure to familiarize yourself with their appearance so you only use official, legitimate ones. Because safety matters!

Payment is cash only, in Quetzals. Preferably small bills because they won’t have change for the larger ones. Especially if you’re off the beaten path.

Private Shuttles

Your final option is pre-booking shuttle vans with private services. If you have a big group, lots of luggage, or kids in tow this is probably going to be your best bet for transiting from city to city.

These services pick you up at the international airport or the address of your choosing and drop you, your travel group, and your luggage off at your chosen address or destination for a pre-set price.

It’s the easiest but also the priciest way to get around. But sometimes, that peace of mind is worth it!

👉 I recommend GetTransfers for booking transfer shuttles.

Final Thoughts: Is there Uber in Guatemala?

So…is there Uber in Guatemala? Yes, there is Uber in Guatemala and it’s perfectly safe to use. Where it’s available.

The biggest downside is that it’s only available in a few tourist centers, so you’ll need to get creative and be open-minded if you’re planning to explore towns off the beaten path.

Thankfully, you can take it between touristy areas, like getting an Uber Guatemala City to Antigua. But it’ll cost you getting to Antigua Guatemala that way!

However, the absence of other reputable ridesharing apps may present challenges for travelers seeking convenient options in more remote areas.

👉 For the best experience, I recommend using Uber when possible and booking shuttles for transit between cities.

Renting a car should be done with caution, only if you’ve driven elsewhere in Latin America and you can afford to rent a 4WD if you’re planning to go north of Lake Atitlan. Have a good travel guide handy, too!

Regardless of how you decide to get around Guatemala in your travels, have a fabulous time! It’s one of our favorite countries in Central America for a very good reason. It’s amazing!
