The beach is filled with local families, kids playing volleyball, boats, and more. It’s also home to some of the most beautiful views in Mexico, making it an ideal spot for a family vacation.

10. Tulum Ruins

11. Coba Ruins
👉 On this Coba tour, you’ll find a variety of well-preserved structures, including the enormous central pyramid.
The Coba Ruins are located about an hour and a half from Tulum, but they’re definitely worth the trip. This ancient Mayan city is set among a lush jungle and two large lagoons that make for some great photo ops.
Although you can no longer climb the pyramid, Kids will love this adventure, as well as exploring the many archaeological sites located here.
Coba is extra special because it’s still being excavated, unlike Tulum or Chichen Itza. So it has more of an Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider feeling to it. A guided tour here is well worthwhile!
The Coba Ruins also features a variety of wildlife such as spider monkeys, parrots, and toucans, so be sure to have your camera ready!
12. Chichen Itza

The ruins are small, making them great for families with really small kids who aren’t ready for a sprawling site like Chichen Itza. However, the ruins are well-marked with a path that leads you to all the structures.

The most iconic site is El Castillo, a 12-meter-tall pyramid that offers stunning views of the surrounding jungle. There are also several other structures to explore such as temples, palaces, and plazas.

The reserve also has a variety of trails for hiking and biking, as well as two stunning cenotes or sinkholes that are great for swimming in. Kids love exploring the forests and searching for wildlife.
Take a boat ride with lunch included to Boca Paila Lagoon where you can search for manatees and snorkel on the Mesoamerican reef (weather permitting). Visit Ascension Bay and see different types of nesting birds.

5. Go Shopping
Whether you want to buy some fun beach clothes or shop for fun souvenirs, there are plenty of shops dotting every street – and the beach- in Tulum.
If you want to give back to local artisans and craftspeople, then you can get a better shopping experience than if you let your kiddos buy a piece of plastic junk at the first shop they see.
I don’t say this to you guilt you! I’ve done it too. There was the rubber snake we bought in Cancun, the foam plane we bought in Malaysia...the list goes on!
If you want something different, check out La Llorona and Mixik. Both of these shops are unique sources of gorgeous and authentic Mexican crafts and artwork.

Visiting Ven La Luz is one of the best things to do in Tulum with kids. This iconic work of art by South African artist Daniel Popper is a 10-meter tall sculpture made with steel, wood, rope and greenery.

Best Time to Visit Tulum with Kids
The best time to visit Tulum with kids depends on your family’s budget and interests. The high season (December – April) is when the weather is usually at its finest, but it can also be very busy and quite expensive.
May – June is a great time for families looking for more affordable prices and smaller crowds, while July – August is the rainy season, so plan for a slightly higher chance of showers during your visit.
September to November is great to visit as well, since you’ll still enjoy warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine! One thing to keep in mind when planning your trip is that hurricane season runs from June to October, so be sure to check the weather forecast before you go.
This is also when you may find red seaweed on the beaches, so be sure to also ask your hotel about this before booking.
How Many Days to Spend in Tulum with Kids?
For a family visit, I recommend at least four days in Tulum. This gives you enough time to check out all the main attractions and get some beach and pool time in.
Personally, I prefer seven days as a one-week vacation is just enough time to balance some fun excursions with hotel relaxation.
If you have more than four days to spare, you can take day trips to nearby cenotes or archaeological sites, go horseback riding on the beach, explore the jungle on a bike or ATV tour, visit Coba and other nearby Mayan ruins, go snorkeling at Xel-Ha park, and even take a boat trip to discover Cozumel’s beautiful coral reefs.

Is it Safe to Travel to Tulum with Kids?
Tulum is a very safe destination for families with children. The locals are hospitable and friendly, and you’ll also find plenty of activities that cater to all ages.
While Tulum has been in the news lately for some dangerous situations, these are still statistically much less rare than if you visited pretty much any major city in the US.
If you would willingly visit Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, New Orleans, etc then you shouldn’t worry about visiting Tulum. We’ve visited a lot of Mexico, and have always felt safer there than when we’re traveling in the US.
That being said, it’s always important to keep an eye on your belongings, stay in well-lit areas at night, and take precautions when swimming in the ocean or cenotes.
