Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Which is Best for a Vacation This Year?

Trying to decide between Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen for a Mexico vacation? I can help!

Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen are two of the most popular vacation destinations in Mexico. My family and I lived in Playa del Carmen for nine months and we have visited Isla Mujeres several times.

I feel pretty well versed in both locations to be able to compare and contrast them. Both have some amazing reasons to visit. We love each of them, for different reasons.

So which one is right for your next trip? Here’s a comprehensive comparison of the two options to help you decide.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Overview

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, a small island situated near Cancun, is popular for its tranquil waters and sandy beaches.

If you’re looking for something to do in the water, there are many options available such as swimming with whale sharks and snorkeling.

Fun Fact: The name translates to “island of women,” but don’t assume you can also call it “mujeres isla” as the women’s island.

Since it’s quite a small island, you’ll have no trouble getting around or finding accommodations suited for your needs (such as vacation rentals or all-inclusive resorts).

Although Isla Mujeres has grown in popularity since we first visited in 2011. We had a very different experience there 10 years later than we did originally. Both were really fun!

Isla Mujeres

Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a beach town located on the Riviera Maya. It’s known for its lively nightlife and beautiful beaches.

You can find plenty to do in Playa del Carmen, from swimming with turtles to exploring ancient Maya ruins.

And there are plenty of hotels and resorts to choose from. One downside of Playa del Carmen, however, is that it can be more crowded than Isla Mujeres since it’s such a popular tourist destination.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Location

Isla Mujeres is an island while Playa del Carmen is on the mainland. This can be a pro or a con, depending on your preferences.

If you want the peace and quiet of an island vacation, Isla Mujeres is a great choice. But if you prefer to have more options for activities and nightlife, Playa del Carmen might be a better option.

Both locations are considered part of Mexico’s Riviera Maya so you can expect beautiful beaches and clear turquoise waters no matter which one you choose.

Playa del Carmen

Getting to Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen from Cancun

Getting to Isla Mujeres from the Cancun International Airport is easy. Just take the Isla Mujeres ferry. Rides only take about 20 minutes and there are several companies to choose from.

The Cancun Playa del Carmen route takes a bit longer to travel. You’ll need to go by car or bus. The drive takes about 45 minutes to an hour. I don’t recommend taking a taxi because they’re notorious for overcharging tourists.

I recommend pre-booking a transfer transportation service to Playa del Carmen from Cancun. It saves time and prevents worry when you arrive at the airport. Just look for the person holding a sign with your name on it.

I recommend Playa del Carmen Shuttle for transportation between Cancun airport and Playa del Carmen.

Weather in Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen

The weather in both Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen is pretty much the same since they’re both located in the same region of Mexico.

You can expect sunny skies and warm temperatures year-round, with the exception of a few months of hurricane season (typically June-November).

We actually experienced a low-level hurricane in Playa del Carmen in August 2021. The city responds very orderly and responsibly to these weather anomalies. So if you travel there during hurricane season and happen to experience one, it’ll be okay.

So if you’re looking to escape the cold weather, either of these destinations would be a great choice.

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Geography and Size

Isla Mujeres is a small island (measuring just 4.3 miles long and 1 mile wide) while Playa del Carmen is located on the mainland. This means that there’s less to explore on Isla Mujeres but it also makes it easier to get around.

Playa del Carmen is a bit larger (measuring about 30 square miles) but it’s still a relatively small town. That said, Playa del Carmen’s size and location give it more amenities and variety.

So if you’re looking for a more intimate vacation, Isla Mujeres might be a better choice. But if you prefer to have more options for activities and nightlife, then Playa del Carmen is a better option.

Playa del Carmen

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Safety

Although the United States Mexico travel advisory warns of potential risks such as criminal activity and violence in Riviera Maya tourist destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, it does not include Isla Mujeres on that list.

According to Numbeo, Isla Mujeres boasts high safety levels and low crime indices. This basically means that it is a very nice place to visit.

  • Safety Index: Isla Mujeres: 88.24 (Very High) vs Playa del Carmen: 51.02 (Moderate)
  • Crime Index: Isla Mujeres: 11.76 (Very Low) vs Playa del Carmen: 48.98 (Moderate)

Compared to Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen has a higher crime rate and a lower safety index. When we lived there from 2021-2022, crime increased in the area.

Note: it’s not the reason we left (we decided to drive to South America!) nor did we ever personally feel unsafe while there.

In addition, Playa del Carmen’s numbers are still significantly better than most US cities. Including our hometown of Chicago, IL.

That said, take the same precautions you would in any new place. Mexico is a beautiful country, but familiarize yourself with the local customs and laws before traveling there. And as always, keep an eye on your belongings and don’t walk alone at night.

This includes securing valuables in your hotel room and keeping a close eye on your belongings at the beach. I take our phones, money, etc into the water with us at the beach in a waterproof pouch.

👉 I love this waist pouch. It triple seals before rolling down to velcro shut. After 2+ years of regular use, I’ve had no problems.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Getting Around

Getting around Isla Mujeres is easy since it’s such a small island. You can walk or ride a golf cart pretty much anywhere you want to go. We have done both, and golf carts are generally pretty affordable for single-day rentals.

Playa del Carmen is a bit larger but still manageable. The best way to get around Playa del Carmen is by foot, taxi, or bus.

We only rented a car there for day trips, before we brought our own car down from the US, but many people do rent one for the duration of their vacation.

👉 I recommend using Discover Cars for renting a car on your trip!

If you’re staying in the touristy areas (east of 50th), you probably won’t need a car since pretty much everything is within walking distance. Although, it can be nice to have a car if you want to explore further out or if you’re planning on making any day trips.

One of the best ways to get around Playa del Carmen, even as a family, is in a jeep! I highly recommend renting a jeep if you’re considering renting a car.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Beaches

Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen both have beautiful white sand beaches. However, they do differ in terms of what you can expect.

Isla Mujeres is known for its calm, clear waters which make it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Playa del Carmen’s beaches also have clear waters but they can be a bit rougher since they’re located on the open ocean.

Note: Playa del Carmen’s facing direction means it’s subject to the red seaweed (sargazo) that covers the beaches during the rainy season. Take this into account, too, when planning your vacation.

The beaches in Isla Mujeres are located on the western-facing side of Isla Mujeres while the beaches in Playa del Carmen are eastern facing. This means that the water is calmer in Isla Mujeres than in Playa del Carmen.

So if you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation, Isla Mujeres might be a better choice. But if you’re looking for some fun waves to play in, then Playa del Carmen is a better option.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Nightlife

Isla Mujeres is known for its tranquility while Playa del Carmen is known for its lively nightlife. There are some bars on Isla Mujeres but Playa del Carmen has bars as well as nightclubs on 5th Avenue, like Club CocoBongo.

So if you’re looking for a quiet vacation where you can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, Isla Mujeres is a great choice.

There are bars on Isla Mujeres, but they’re more the day-drinking kind of places. At least, that’s more our style. We even take our kid for some light refreshments!

But if you’re looking for a place to let loose and have some fun, then Playa del Carmen is a better option.

It’s easy to find tranquility in Playa del Carmen, you just need to stay west of 20th Avenue to avoid the excessive bar and nightclub noise. We lived on 55th Avenue, near the Chedraui grocery store, and it was totally peaceful.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Accommodations

There are plenty of accommodations to choose from on both Isla Mujeres and in Playa del Carmen. Both places offer budget hotels and luxury resorts as well as beachfront properties to enjoy.

On Isla Mujeres, you can find everything from budget-friendly hostels to luxury villas. Playa del Carmen also has a wide range of accommodation options, although the prices tend to be a bit higher than on Isla Mujeres.

If you’re looking for a cheap place to stay, then Isla Mujeres is a better option. But if you’re willing to spend a bit more money, then Playa del Carmen has a wider variety of luxurious accommodations to choose from.

You can find waterpark resorts in and near Playa del Carmen, but not on Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Food

Both Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen have a wide variety of food options to choose from. And they’re both really tasty places to eat!

On Isla Mujeres, you’ll find everything from Mexican street food to seafood. We loved the breakfast options on Isla Mujeres as well as the burger place we found in Centro.

Playa del Carmen also has a wide variety of food options, although the prices tend to be a bit higher than on Isla Mujeres. You can find common US chains that don’t exist on Isla Mujeres, including Starbucks and McDonalds.

Playa del Carmen even has a DQ and an IHOP

Isa Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Things to Do

Both Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres offers a wide variety of activities. Isla Mujeres is known for its snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing on the beach while Playa del Carmen is known for its nightlife, archaeological sites, and eco-tourism.

Things to do in Isla Mujeres

  • Snorkeling tours
  • Swimming
  • Relaxing on the beach
  • Walking to the lookout point at Punta Sur
  • Explore the island by golf cart
  • Try scuba diving at an underwater museum

Things to do in Playa del Carmen

  • Visit archaeological sites like Tulum or Coba
  • Take a guided eco-tour in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere
  • Take a day trip to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel
  • Explore the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza
  • Swim in a cenote

As you can see, both Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen offer a wide variety of activities. So it really just depends on what you’re looking for in a vacation.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Prices

In terms of Playa del Carmen vs Isla Mujeres prices, Isla Mujeres is generally less expensive than Playa del Carmen. This is because while it’s a smaller island, it’s less built up with mega-resorts and pricey all inclusives.

There are more affordable options for restaurants on Isla Mujeres, too.

However, there are still ways to find affordable accommodation and food in Playa del Carmen. We love Ay Taco! And overall, the prices are still cheaper than in many other places in the Caribbean.

So if you’re looking for a cheaper vacation, Isla Mujeres might be a better choice. But if you don’t mind spending a bit more money, then Playa del Carmen is a great option.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Mayan Ruins

If you’re interested in Mayan ruins, then Playa del Carmen is a better choice since it’s closer to the archaeological sites of Tulum and Coba.

There are even smaller Mayan ruins in the Playacar neighborhood of Playa del Carmen. Anyone can walk in along the beach to visit them.

Isla Mujeres does have a Maya temple, but it’s not as well preserved as the ones in Tulum and Coba. The temple is located at Punta Sur, the southern tip of the island. It doesn’t take long to walk around and has a very reasonable entry fee.

So if you’re looking to see some well-preserved Mayan ruins, then Playa del Carmen is a better choice. But if you’re just interested in seeing a Maya temple, then Isla Mujeres is a great option.

Isla Mujeres vs Playa del Carmen: Which Place is Best for Your Next Vacation?

Both Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen make great family vacation destinations. It really just depends on what you’re looking for.

If you want a laid-back island vibe, Isla Mujeres is the place for you.

But if you’re looking for more hotel options and more things to do, Playa del Carmen is probably a better bet.

Ultimately, they’re both great. As a best-case scenario, you should definitely plan to visit both at some point.
